We ended up with a private tour. Our driver was more than our transportation, he was also extremely knowledgeable in the history of the region, Bulgaria, and North Macedonia. We had a great conversation and learned so much on our way to Skopje. Our local guide in Skopje was also super knowledgeable. He spoke nonstop during our guided tour. He answered any questions we had and filled us in on so much of the history and current events of his country. I highly recommend this day trip.
This tour organised by Bultrips Sofia is excellent.
I felt however that I would have got a better pricing if I booked it through Bultrips directly rather than thru Viator. In any event you will have to liaise directly with Bultrips for pick up and other information.
Coming to the tour itself I would say it is excellent and if you have a free day in Sofia this tour is not to be missed. It is well organised. Timely pick up from your city hotel, a very good and careful driver in Daniel who was also a great guide explaining things on the way. At Sopkje too we had a very good guide in Mike for the walking tour. We also had enough free time to look around on our own after the guided tour. All in a very good and worthwhile experience.
Appreciating the diversity of Balkan culture can be difficult, especially with limited time in the region. Rila Monastery and Boyana Church Day Trip from Sofia
, Feb 2020
Really fantastic trip. Our tour guide Vincent was extremely knowledgeable about Bulgarian history and the church and monastery we visited. There was a good pace to the trip and i would thoroughly recommend. Extremely good value for money.
Had a very good guide Martin who was very informative and spoke excellent English.Provided is with a huge amount of information on the history of boyana and Rila which was fascinating. This is a must do trip for any visit to Bulgaria.Recommend doing this in the winter months when you have both boyana and rila to yourselves as there are less tourists
Guide was good and gave us some useful information but there are very few facilities at the monastery. Only two toilets which were a bit basic and not much in the way of eating places. It's a long drive from Sofia so go prepared!

Continue to Boyana Church to gaze at the fascinating pre-Renaissance frescoes that decorate the walls within. Please note, entrance fees are not included on this tour.

Discover Sofia’s hippest nightlife hotspots with an insider guide as you explore the Bulgarian capital with new friends. Tours include complimentary wine, beer, or liquor shots at each of five different locations, plus free dance club admission on weekends.
I would not recommend that one does this tour of both sites in one day. It is too much to cover as they are in different directions and you are on the road much of the time. We also had a small size vehicle for 5 pax which made it very tiring.
At Rila Monastery after a 5 minute or so explanation at the entrance we were given just about 2o minutes to look around.
At Plovdiv we were asked to join a public free walking tour, which was ok but not what was expected. The advertisement for this tour says “ you do not have to carry your guidebook along with you” What an exaggeration !
The driver was also texting whilst on the highway which scared 😟 me.
In any event I would suggest that if you do choose to go with this company I felt I may have been off in terms of pricing had I booked directly with the company rather than through Viator. In fact eventually you have to liaise with this company anyway te pick up time etc,
If you have time only for one trip I would say, depending on your interest of course, just do only Plovdiv, it is well worth visiting.
Forget the hassle of public transport on a private day tour to 2 of Bulgaria’s most popular attractions, optimizing your time with round-trip transfer from your Sofia hotel. If you are not a fan of driving, this trip is for you. Our driver was very knowledgeable of the regions we were visiting and kept us entertained all the time. Make sure to have cash for tipping, this employees are very good at their work and don't make much.
The tour was very educative. Plovdiv is very beautiful and nice to walk around with typical small town atmosphere. The views from top of the mountain are impressive. The other village is very small and full of interesting spots to take nice pictures. The experiment was very relaxing since it is another experience outside the city life of Sofia.
Visit Plovdiv and Koprivshtitsa on a full-day trip from Sophia, and discover the art and architecture of two iconic Bulgarian cities. Stroll the narrow lanes of Plovdiv’s old town, and discover historic traces of the Romans, Thracians, and Byzantines who swept through this region. Continue to Koprivshtitsa for a walking tour to the homes of the city’s most storied residents, and learn how a local revolutionary committee freed Bulgaria from Ottoman rule during the Russo-Turkish war before ending your tour in central Sophia.
Our guide, Vasko, gave us a warm, wonderful and witty introduction to this beautiful city, and it's not-so-distant past. He was very informative, as we saw most of the sites connected with the city's 45 year experience with socialism. Also check out the 365 free tours for a general introduction to the city (Vasko was also our guide for that one), and their Jewish History Tour.
Excellent, well-informing and interesting tour. Would recommend to everyone! Our tour guide Martin knew the history very well and his personal stories about the communist era made the experience even better.

During your personal tasting experience I will guide you through the distinctive world of Bulgarian wines. Although Bulgaria has been producing wine for 5000 years it is still relatively unknown to the rest of the world. Now a rising new generation of Bulgarian boutique winemakers are devoted to the craft and bringing new attention to our country.
You will taste 5 wine varieties of local grapes unique to Bulgaria, that can not be found anywhere else: Miskets, Melnik, Mavrud, Gumza and Rubin. Plus, local cheeses, artisanal bread and mineral water.
The tasting is held in one of the best boutique wine shops in Sofia – Tempus Vini, which is located on an artsy street in the city center, known for its fine restaurants and boutiques. And just a few streets away from Sofia’s main pedestrian boulevard.
During the tasting I can tell you about the wine regions of Bulgaria including the history and the wine culture of my beautiful country.
All tastings are held in English or Bulgarian
Departure was from a central point in Sofia near the Cathedral, and slightly delayed to wait for a guest who never turned up. The coach was very comfortable: reclining seats, aircon, USB points, and WiFi.
There were 18 in our party which was very manageable. Plovdiv was 1 90 minute drive, so it was odd that we stopped at a MacDonalds for 20 minutes after only a hour.
The structure of the rest of the day was fine: a leisurely walk through the old part of Plovdiv, an 90 minute lunch break and then a drive to a picturesque small village with free time to wander etc.
HOWEVER, our guide, Chris, whilst polite and helpful throughout, and with good English, often simply talked for the sake of talking, and instead of giving us a true insight into the region and history, felt it necessary to concentrate on many inconsequential aspects, repeat himself and make unfunny, repetitive remarks about "whiskey time" and "let's rock and roll" and his time working overseas. He needs to structure and modify his talk: it became rather boring an somewhat boorish.
Otherwise, a well-organised and enjoyable trip, and fair value for money, but one which could have been much more rewarding.

Full-Day Rila Monastery, the cave of St.Ivan and Boyana Church Tour from Sofia
Well worth a visit
, Jan 2020
A full day out of Sofia but worth it. Boyana Church is amazing then a ride through the countryside and up the mountain to the monastery and it’s spectacular. It was too icy to get to the cave but it didn’t spoil our trip. After we visited a typical Bulgarian mountain restaurant and sampled some traditional Bulgarian food and wine. Then 1hr 40 mins drive back to Sofia. Thank you

I simply love the visit tothe Devetaki Cave. It is huge, big and amazingly stunning. It stretches deep for a few kilometres but tourists are restricted to destinated are. It is beautiful and stunning.
The waterfalls is a little small but beautiful in the sense that one can see it cascading down from high above.
Lovech, the little town has its characteristics with few interesting sights to intrigue the tourists.
Overall, the day trip was lovely and money €€€ (solo) spent was worth it.
It s always nice to see the countryside of a big city . This was impressive in the poverty and “backwardness” that still exists in a former Communist controlled country. Horse and plow in afield, elderly ladies stopped over, pushing ancient push carts
The selected sites were average at best.

Really great day, did take only 30 mins for border, can take over 2 hours July/Aug.

The drive through the gorge was stunning.
Couple of tips, you can exchange euros to local currency just after the border, toilets at the border you pay for and are squatting, if you can wait normal toilets in the city. For your free time most restaurants speak English, and best facilities are in the shopping mall.
