Mt. Liamuiga

North West Range, St Kitts

The Basics

Nearly half-way up the mountain, the land becomes a patchwork of farmland and small villages, opening to tropical rainforest before giving way to cloud forest. There are many half-day or full-day tours offering different ways to the mountain. Take a luxurious rail car that meanders 30 miles (48 kilometers) through the island, a guided hike to the summit, or an open-top safari truck through tropical forests, St. Pauls village, and the mountain’s tallest peaks for spectacular views of surrounding islands.

A great hiking experience with our guide Adrian. If you fancy a physical challenge while you are on the Island then I would recommend this. The view (and refreshments) at the top were very welcome. Adrian’s knowledge of the flora and fauna were a bonus.

Adrian was an amazing guide and it was far more fun than I ever expected especially going into this hike solo, He was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor! While it was very challenging he made it an extremely memorable and fun experience. 10/10 would recommend him for this tour!

Hiking Mount Liamuiga Volcano in St Kitts
We were so fortunate to have Adrian as out tour guide. Having had experience climbing to the volcano since he was 11 yrs old, my husband and I hiked up and down safely. We felt lucky to be the only 2 in his group and he shared a wealth of information. We are moderate hikers, and this was the hardest hike we ever did, but Adrian knows how to motivate you! We are very truly grateful to him. Definitely the highlight of our cruise trip!

Beautiful view at the top, but can get crowded so be prepared for a very tough hike with only a few minutes at the top.

Hiking Mount Liamuiga Volcano in St Kitts
My husband and I (34 and 30) recently did the Mt. Liamuiga hike and it was excellent. We really enjoyed the experience and would strongly recommend going for it to anyone considering. Adrian was an expert guide - he's been hiking the volcano since he was a child, and he knows so much about the area. His knowledge made the experience even more enjoyable, as we learned a lot on the way. Adrian was very good at gauging when the group needed a break (we had some individuals in our group in their 60s, who required more frequent rest stops), and at guiding us through some tricky areas. Be prepared to get muddy and very wet! It was not a particularly difficult hike in terms of cardio/endurance (strangely, I rarely felt like I was "climbing" despite the elevation) - the trickiest part was trying to avoid slipping as the majority of the way you're dodging mud, tree roots and branches, and many other tripping hazards. Would not recommend for anyone with any kind of mobility concerns. Otherwise, if you're in reasonably good shape, this is an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience!

Exhausting but amazing!

Hiking Mount Liamuiga Volcano in St Kitts
This hike is a major accomplishment that you'll be proud of for the rest of your life. It is by no means easy and the terrain is incredibly difficult to climb both up and down. We did complete the hike in under 4 hours when on average it usually takes at least 5 hours, this may have been a huge factor into why it felt so ridiculously difficult. However, the heat and humidity are also a massive part of why it's such a challenge, we were all (except the guide) dripping in sweat. My boyfriend and I completed this hike whilst on a cruise and booked independently with Poinciana Tours so naturally we were concerned about arriving back on time, however we had completed the hike and were back at the cruise port just before 2:30. The drive to the volcano is about 40 minutes each way and is in a really awesome safari style mini bus. I wouldn't recommend this hike for anyone who isn't fit and healthy, I would also suggest walking long distances regularly before you attempt this hike as the incline and terrain makes this way harder than normal. There were only four of us in the group the day we hiked which I think made the experience much more enjoyable than if you were in a larger group and the guide was friendly and very knowledgable telling us not only factual information but also his experiences from his years climbing the volcano. We saw monkeys and the view at the top was spectacular and definitely made the exhaustion feel worth while. It rained on our way down which made the mud incredibly slippery so I would recommend wearing some footwear with a decent grip. My muscles ached for days after this hike so if you need to walk any stairs in the following days it may be a rather painful experience. I would definitely recommend both this hike and Poinciana Tours if you're wanting an unforgettable experience and wish to complete a climb that you'll forever feel very proud of.

Wow, what a hike/climb!

Hiking Mount Liamuiga Volcano in St Kitts
Wow, what a hike! Actually….what a hike and climb!! Our family of 4 (60, 57, 22, & 21) did the hike and once done it was a great feeling of accomplishment. During the hike/climb there were times that I thought for sure I would not not make it to the top however we all persevered! Definitely an all body workout! Our guide, Adrian, was 100% amazing! It was so impressive to see how he could scale the volcano so effortlessly and his knowledge of it was second to none. He did a great job of showing us the tips/tricks to scale the volcano and stay safe. Be ready for an adventure and be prepared to get dirty!

Brimstone Hill Fortress

On a hill overlooking the northwest coast of the island, Brimstone Hill Fortress is a well-preserved historic fortification. The structure was designed by the British and built by African slaves in the 17th century and used interchangeably by the British and French forces that captured the island. Dubbed "The Gibraltar of the Caribbean," the fortress was in full use until its abandonment in the 1850s, and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
