Top Day Trips from Tallinn

32 Reviews
With a picturesque Old Town and a setting along the Baltic Sea, Tallinn has plenty to offer visitors. Yet the Estonian capital also makes a strategic base for exploring the region, rich with historic sights and natural beauty. Here are your options for Tallinn day tours.

Lahemaa National Park — 30 miles (47 km) east
Just an hour’s drive from Tallinn, Lahemaa is Estonia’s largest national park and one of the largest in Europe. It’s the ideal spot for nature lovers, with 14 lakes, eight rivers, and four waterfalls, as well as acres of forest and splendid views of the Gulf of Finland. Spend the day hiking, biking, and wildlife watching in the park, or take a tour of the grand 18th-century Sagadi Manor.

Helsinki — 52 miles (85 km) north
The capital of Finland lies just across the Baltic Sea from Estonia—a scenic 2.5-hour ferry ride. With just one day to explore, it’s best to visit with a tour guide, and a Helsinki sightseeing tour covers all the most memorable sights, including the Temppeliaukio Church, the Sibelius Monument, Helsinki Cathedral, and the Presidential Palace.

Haapsalu — 62 miles (100 km) southwest
On Estonia’s west coast, Haapsalu is best known for its striking wooden houses, scenic seafront promenade, and 13th-century Padise Monastery. Day tours from Tallinn often include a visit to nearby coastal towns such as Paldiski and Keila-Joa.

Rakvere — 62 miles (100 km) east
The historic town of Rakvere is best known for its 14th-century castle, which hosts a number of concerts, exhibitions, and events. Additional highlights include the Rakvere Museum, a burgeoning rock and punk music scene, and a variety of unique shops.

Pärnu — 80 miles (128 km) south
A lively resort perched on Estonia’s south coast, Pärnu is nicknamed the Estonian Summer Capital for its sunny beaches and summer music festivals. Admire the traditional wooden houses on an Old Town walking tour, tuck into some traditional Estonian food at a local restaurant, or dip your toes in the sand at Pärnu Beach.

Narva — 130 miles (210 km) east
Narva sits on Estonia’s border with Russia and has a distinctive Russian feel, but prepare for a long day as it’s an over 3-hour journey each way. Highlights of a city tour include Narva Castle, the Town Museum, and the Voskresensky Cathedral.
