Outdoor Adventures in Tanzania

17 Reviews
From single- or multi-day Serengeti safaris to serious Kilimanjaro treks, Tanzania was made for adventure. When visiting, the question isn't if you'll have adventurous experiences, but rather which ones you'll take. See below for your options.

Safari Day Trips
It's possible to get a taste of Tanzania's famous wildlife in as little as a single day. Depending on where you're staying, day safaris can take you into a variety of national parks, including Arusha, Mikumi, and Lake Manyara. From Arusha, you can also journey to the world's largest volcanic crater, the UNESCO-listed Ngorongoro Crater, home to more than 25,000 mammals, including elephants, baboons, leopards, and lions. Even the rare black rhino resides here. Tarangire National Park, known as the "Elephant Playground" for the herds of some 300 individuals that hang out along the Tarangire River, is accessible on a day trip too.

Multi-Day Safaris
The more time you have, the more of Tanzania's staggering biodiversity you'll get to experience. Multi-day safaris range from a three-day excursion into the Serengeti to a two-week trip that includes Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, and Lake Manyara, plus a good chance of spotting the Big Five. Plan your visit for the start of the dry season in June for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the spectacular mass wildebeest migration.

Kilimanjaro Climbs
Some come to Tanzania for the wildlife, and others come to conquer Kilimanjaro. The dormant volcano is Africa's highest peak and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world. Climbers can make the return journey in six or seven days following a variety of routes, depending on the stops made along the way.

Exploring Zanzibar
The tiny archipelago of Zanzibar has a completely different vibe from the rest of Tanzania—and a completely different set of outdoor adventures. Set sail around the islands on a traditional dhow for a day of swimming, snorkeling, and sunning. On Prison Island, 30 minutes by boat from Stone Town, you can observe giant land tortoises or snorkel off the beach, while a nature trail winding through the Jozani Forest offers the opportunity to spot the rare Red Colobus Monkey, as well as a number of other endemic species.
