Frari Church (Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari)

From the outside, the brick Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari (Frari Church) looks rather plain in its Italian Gothic style. But step inside and you are surrounded by some of the greatest beauty of the Italian Renaissance. Built for the Fransicans in the 14th and 15th centuries, the design itself is simple, but the art that the monks commissioned more than makes up for it.

Of the many masterpieces and monuments from Renaissance artists and sculptors, the most significant painting is Titian's 1518 Assumption of the Virgin, which is set over the altar and changed painting forever with its innovative style and bright colors. In addition, side chapels are full of more art and the main church houses the tombs of significant wealthy Venetians. Titian himself is buried here in an impressive tomb, while sculptor Antonio Canova has a pyramid-shaped monument.

Practical Info
