Fireworks at Versailles

The Palace of Versailles (Château de Versailles) is arguably the most popular day trip for visitors to Paris. Even repeat visitors tend to go back again and again, even if it's simply to spend time on the massive grounds behind the palace, known as the Jardins de Versailles.

But for those in the know, it's not just a day trip destination – but a nighttime treat as well. During the summer, the gardens, fountains and above all, the Grand Canal in the center of it all become the setting for a two-hour music and light show, followed by some pretty spectacular fireworks.

The fountains night show is one where visitors stroll through the gardens and witness the synchronized water and light shows set to classical music. And they're not small displays, either – lasers create a wall of light reaching into the sky, while the water and the music combine to make a wall of sound. And then, of course, the fireworks make for a concert all their own!

You can take public transportation there and back – the RER and Metro are still running when it's over – but if you can book it through a tour operator, then you can avoid the herds and arrive back in the City of Light in comfort and style.
