Some of my earliest solo travel memories happened in Buenos Aires. Originally intended as the starting point of a 6-month backpacking trip, Buenos Aires is where I returned post-travel to live in the city for more than a year. In that time and on subsequent visits, I walked and cycled its diverse barrios; explored its parks, museums, and tango halls; and sought out all the best spots to eat, drink, and party like a porteño (local).
Mostly, I learned to slow down and relax into its laid-back lifestyle. Nothing happens quickly in Buenos Aires, but you can still pack plenty into a day tour. This itinerary ensures you check off all the main sights and central neighborhoods.
Pack a windproof jacket if you’re visiting outside of summer.
If you only have time for one thing, make it Caminito Street in La Boca with its colorful buildings.
Take a guided tour instead of using the busy subte (metro). First, visit Plaza de Mayo to see the Casa Rosada, where Evita stood on the balcony, and the Metropolitan Cathedral. Next, head south to the brightly painted houses of La Boca and stroll the lanes of San Telmo—the Sunday market along Defensa Street is a favorite. Finish with a drive along 9 de Julio Avenue to view the Obelisk.
Explore the northern neighborhoods of Recoleta and Palermo. Recoleta Cemetery is the headline act with Evita’s grave among the grand mausoleums. Afterward, visit the Palermo Botanical Gardens, the MALBA art museum, or the Evita Museum. Sample some Argentine specialties like empanadas (savory pastries) and steak at one of the restaurants around Plaza Italia or Plaza Serrano. At sunset, head to the Floralis Genérica statue—the flower sculpture closes its petals as the sun sets.
A tango show is a quintessential Buenos Aires visitor experience. Choose a show with a pre-show dinner or attend a dance class to try out some moves. After the show, sample the city’s legendary nightlife, heading to the bars of Palermo Soho to sip cocktails with the locals or Puerto Madero, known for its glamorous bars and nightclubs. Choose one overlooking the glittering waterfront and Puente de Mujer bridge for the best views.
