Rangitoto was really an amazing island to hike on. The guide showed the most important locations of the island. He was overall very nice and helpful. Can highly recommend this tour

Time to cruise

We booked this as an alternative to an expensive shore excursion from a cruise. We were not informed which pier the ferry left from and also had to get a printed ticket from the ferry company (which was also not indicated when booking). We had to find our own way to the correct pier but found the road train (pulled by a tractor) we used for the tour of the island quite easily. The tour was a bumpy ride but the tour guide/driver was friendly and informative with the unique dry humour of a Kiwi. The boardwalk steps were an enjoyable challenge for us with stunning views as our reward, (obviously unsuitable for those with limited mobility). It was not clear when booking that the tour would return in time to catch the 4pm ferry, which caused us some concern in getting back before our cruise ship sailed!

Wonderfully planned out. Informative tour up the volcano and then a short hike to the summit. Best views around. So peaceful and serene. A must-co!

Highly recommended for first time visitors to Rangitoto. Had a great time. The tour guide was very knowledgable and enjoyed the scenes. We stopped at Devonport in the return ferry and climbed up mt Victoria as well, making it a perfect 1-day trip.

GREAT PLACE

Short ferry ride to the island. Book before you go and book the trip with the tractor ride as those places book out quickly. The walk to the summit is very step but the view is worth the pain. Our tour guide was very informative with the history of the island. Take a hat. food and lots of water. All rubbish has to be taken back to Auckland as there are not bins on the island. We went over the Easter week end and the ferry was over crowded, we took the early trip which had the option of staying on the island longer.

I live in Auckland therefore know something about Rangitoto as well as see the island almost every day hiowever this was the first time I ever had a chance to visit it.The trip by Ferry was good and staff was friendly. We arrived and joined the tour in a tractor pulled wagon that was very bumpy but this was actually part of the fun.The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly showing us all the interesting spots, mentioning aspects of the geography, fauna and flora, and history. We returned, had a time to eat our lunch and walk around. The only thing missing was that the guide (or brochures) we had forgot to mention about the Museum that is on the left hand side of the ferry terminal.Only when we were boarding the ferry to go back to Auckland we noticed that there was a museum and it was open for visitors. Frustrating. I any way, everything else was pretty good and recommended. Just don't eat too much before taking the excursion.

Interesting island and the train...

Interesting island and the train made it easy to see. They handed out ponchos and it did pour while we were at the summit. Got really windy and poured down so take the poncho when offered. They did not allow time to see the lava tubes on the guided tour, we had brought flashlights to see them, so don't have to tote torches for this. You could probably go on your own but, would have to catch a latter ferry. Nice ferry ride and the train ride made it easy to complete.

I loved it but then I love to hike...

I loved it but then I love to hike. My husband not so much. Be aware you are walking on a volcano lava rock and it is a long steep walk to the top. Glad we went on a cloudy day. I love the view once you reach the peak. Be certain to wear good supportive shoes, you're feet will be tired from the trip. Saw many people who had fallen from slipping on the lava rock and were scraped up from the experience. Never fret it is beautiful and fun.
