Truely a great night. 20-somethings & 70-somethings all at the same table enjoying each other's company and the great food & entertainment. In Palermo Hollywood one of BA's best neighborhoods. Safe and easy to find. We were glad we went for the mixology part fitrst. Not only were they great recipes, but that group bonded during the bar session so when the "food only" folks arrived they had to catch up. The staff do a great job checking on any allergies in the group, and you can tell they are well-trained profeessionals. Things clipped right along and the whole night stayed ata very high standard. I bought my chef hat after and it makes a great souvenir!
This is an empanada making (not cooking) class. A distinction worth making as you will not be learning how to make the filling, just how they take the filling and roll the pastry dough.
It was nice to have it explained how to order a steak in Argentina, what empanada shapes mean and make mate ourselves. Certainly worth enjoying a dip in the local culture, as well as the wine in copious amounts. Would definitely recommend for first time visitors to the country, especially if you do not know much about the culture or speak Spanish.
My husband and I had the best time at the Argentine Experience night. The mixology class was awesome! We loved all three drinks that were made and the instructions were great and easy follow. We are looking forward to making them at home! The empanada making and diner was amazing! Was fun making our own empanadas. The steak was the best I had our whole trip. It was cooked to perfection!! Everyone who instructed the class was great! Very funny and informative. Over all was an unforgettable night and we are so happy we got to do this one of our last nights in Argentina.
We had an enjoyable evening at The Argentine Experience. Note that this is NOT a cooking class - it is a social gathering where you can learn a little about Argentinian culture along with 16 other tourists, in a lively environment with lots of wine.
You start out by learning about empanadas and their various ingredients. You get to fill and fold a meat empanada on your own (with the provided pre-cut dough and fillings). Then, you get to get creative and design your own creation, using the same dough and the fillings. But you don't get to make any other types of empanadas (don't worry, there is plenty of food later in the evening).
You learn about Argentinian hand gestures and what they mean. This is a fun and silly segment.
You also learn about what words to use to order your steak in Argentina (which, we found over the course of the next two weeks in dining out around Argentina, is not "universal" - "muy jugoso" does not mean "rare" in every restaurant). However, most steak restaurants understand the English words for ordering meat temperatures.
You partake in a delicious starter of grilled provolone cheese, sausage, blood sausage and crispy pork. And then, you get to eat the empanada that you folded. The main course is steak with grilled vegetables. I must say, this was probably the best steak that we ate during our entire trip! The quality of the meat is exceptional, and it is so flavorful and tender and juicy.
You then get two desserts, before you make your own alfajores, which are essentially cookie sandwiches with dulce de leche in the middle, dipped in coconut shavings and melted chocolate. You also get to make your own mate tea, which tastes like very strong, bitter tea. Most Argentinians who we talked to later said that they put sugar in their mate to make it taste better.
Overall, I would say The Argentine Experience is a fun, engaging introduction to Argentinian culture and food, and provides an excellent steak dinner, along with plenty of wine. However, at $80 per person, it's a bit expensive.
I was a little disappointed that at the end of the evening, they don't give you the hat that you've been wearing all night or your choice of a beautiful ceramic mate cup (these are available for additional purchase - I think they were $15 USD). Also, they asked for optional tips at the end of the evening - again, at $80 per person, there should be no tipping necessary.
I was traveling with friends that were attending a conference. So i decided to do this tour solo on a night that there were all busy. The staff was amazing. They took time to introduce themselves and made me feel very welcome. They introduced the groups as they sat them at the tables and placed me in the middle so i was surrounded by new friends. Fun group of staff, lots of laughs and stories that left me feeling like I understand the food, culture and people of Argentina a little better at the end of the night.
This is a very good experience, you learn a lot about the local culture, the wine, and the food and have fun practicing what they teach you.
The title of this tour is however misleading and the description too: you are not making empanadas from scratch but just filling and closing them, and the same for the alfajores, you are not making the cookies but just assembling them.
Similarly, this is not a small group experience, but you are dining with 20 or 30 other people and the room is very noisy after a few glasses of wine
Would we have had these details, I am not sure we would have subscribed but it was fun all the same
This is a super fun experience in BA. Make sure you take the mixology course, as this is also nice. It's highly interactive and fun, including empanada making I was terrible, wine drinking, and of course, a massive steak. The people running the show are super fun, teaching everything from Argentinian hand gestures to how to order your steak I'm a juegosa guy. This is the one tour to do in BA if you don't have any other time. Go. It's worth it.
