Great Workshop to Learn and Appreciate the Art of Ukiyo-e

Traditional Japanese Woodblock Print "Ukiyo-e" in Asakusa | Mär 2020
This is a great workshop, not only to introduce ukiyo-e technique, but also how to appreciate the handmade qualities of ukiyo-e print making. The instructors were all very knowledgeable about the entire craft, from how tools are made, to printing techniques. The shop is also a wonderful treasure trove of ukiyo-e prints to appreciate.

Nice place but not easy to find. Sumotories are nice and try their best to please people. They play with children. The show is interesting.

Visit Gunkanjima Island (Battleship Island) in Nagasaki | Feb 2020
We’re made aware that we were unable to land on the island. No English translator but we given and English information leaflets. Staff couldn’t have been more helpful and courteous. As no island landing we were allowed to visit to museum close to the landing jetty. Very interesting including virtual reality tours of the island. Fantastic afternoon

Warning: Do Not Book This Tour It Is a Scam

Electric-Powered Biking Tour: Asakusa, Akihabara, and Imperial Palace | Feb 2020
Warning to fellow travelers, do not book this tour. It is a scam. I arrived 20 minutes early to the designated location and the location instructions were incorrect. I called the contact number provided and the person I spoke to was unwilling to assist me even though I provided my exact location via a maps pin drop. After calling back several times over a 30 minute period trying to help we had no choice but to turn back. I reached out to Viator for a refund and they were unable to provide one. Again, this is a scam, do not book.

A Cultural And Educational Tour

Traditional Japanese Woodblock Print "Ukiyo-e" in Asakusa | Feb 2020
This class was very insightful. It was interesting to see a style of mass producing print that relies almost completely on man power and yet is still quick and highly detailed. The instructors who ran the class were able to explain the process clearly in English and even took the time to help me with my admittedly bad Japanese. Great class for anyone interested in traditional art or production.

Robot Restaurant Show with Dinner at ’Alice's Fantasy Restaurant’ | Jän 2020
The Robot show was excellent and I would highly recommend it to everyone to do when travelling to Tokyo. Thoroughly enjoyable experience for all ages. The food at The Alice in Wonderland restaurant was delicious & the decor was well worth a look at. The whole family thoroughly enjoyed our evening at both the Robot Show & The Alice in Wonderland Restaurant.

Challenge Sumo Wrestlers and Enjoy a Chanko Lunch / Dinner | Jän 2020
Shima & Jambo made this whole experience a delight with their fun & interactive demonstration of the history & training/lifestyle of a Sumo wrestler. The lady who described and translated everything into English for us was very good at getting the information across. Recommended. I would go again.

Why???????

Robot Show and Kawaii Monster Cafe Ticket Package including Dinner | Jän 2020
Seriously why??? I’m at fault for not reading or seeing anything about Robot Restaurant / show before agreeing to go. I should have been tipped off by my wife’s reluctant question when booking. It’s a tourist trap from beginning to end. It’s absurd to me how their reviews are not worse. Some friends warned us it was a tourist trap but that “you should go once in your life time”. No, you shouldn’t. Japan has plenty of wacky fun things this is not one of them. Maybe when it first started it was remotely interesting but to me it was just cheap, really really cheap. Tacky and cheap. Monster Cafe is also too tacky for my taste and the food was even worse than my already very very low expectations. At least at monster cafe some of the performers were entertaining but don’t go to either, there are much better things to do in Tokyo, unless your thing is cheap, tacky, tasteless tourist traps!

Challenge Sumo Wrestlers and Enjoy a Chanko Lunch / Dinner | Dez 2019
This was SUCH a great experience. I went on a Monday and the wrestlers were amazing. They were so thorough in their instructions, explanations, and answers. It was also so fun and I was laughing the whole time! They make it so entertaining. One of the most memorable aspects of my trip. The Chanko soup was good and the bento box was decent. Love the whole experience.

Kintsugi Experience in Tokyo | Dez 2019
We found our way to this nifty studio in Shinjuku where several artisans were at work on kintsugi, pottery, and glass projects. We were greeted and seated on a raised tatami area with low tables and floor cushions. Our instructor was lovely. She spoke almost no English but we found it wasn't necessary -- she showed us what to do and coached us through the whole process. The method we learned is a modern adaptation of traditional kintsugi, as laquer can cause severe allergic reactions (and real gold would have priced this experience into the stratosphere!). It is trickier than I had imagined. Don't go with a belly full of coffee -- you'll want a steady hand to accomplish good results. The finished piece is lovely and quite a memorable souvenir from our time in Japan. We stayed in Shinjuku for the rest of the day exploring the plethora of interesting little shops and restaurants in the area.
