After paying for the premium upgrade of a private tour and a "hacienda" hotel we regretted our decision. The tour consisted of proper pickup at exactly 0800 for the two of us . . . in a 12 person COACH!!! That was the first indication that the tour operator had no clue what we bought. We had a nice stop overlooking the city and then proceeded to Cotopaxi entrance for a 15 minute stop, some tea then on to Cotopaxi for the 45 minute climb. Note there are no restrooms inside the park with very bumpy roads so be prepared. Then we were dropped off at our hotel at 1:30 in the afternoon and left in the middle of nowhere until 0830 the next morning. Oscar abandoned us with the explanation that the weather required him to do Cotopaxi on day 1 and Quilotoa on day 2. He wanted to pick us up at 0900 and we insisted on 0800 per the schedule. I guess he decided to negotiate and make it 0830. So I made due with a self-guided tour around the pastures of the hacienda and a few pics of the Llamas. Meanwhile back at the hacienda our food selection for both lunch and dinner was the same: Trout, Tilapia, or Chicken. Bottom line is a two-day tour should not have an 18 1/2 hour pause in the middle of it with nothing to do. On the evening of day 1, I contacted Viator, who was VERY helpful. They communicated my displeasure with the tour operator. The next morning the weather on Cotopaxi was beautiful, so the weather excuse was just that. An excuse. Oscar picked us up in a smaller, more appropriate car. We visited the lake (as per day 1 schedule), indigenous house, lunch and a view of Quilotoa. Then literally raced our way back to our hotel, flashing lights at every car in front of us to get out of the way, arriving at 8:00 PM! Oscar was clearly unhappy we contacted Viator as he barely provided any tour-guiding like he did the day before. We were never shown the "town of Tigua" or the interpretation center. I expected a small credit, 20% and was denied because I "got the tour." Those are the facts. After being home and considering what we experienced I believe the tour operator made a mistake and picked us up in a huge coach. As Quilotoa is a significantly longer distance, they made the decision to re-arrange the tour for their own economic purposes so they could return to Quito to get a smaller car for the longer journey to Quilotoa. The original, as published, tour would have been fine. This one was a waste of money
