We had a very competent guide, Elena, who gave us a marvellous overview of the development of Russian art through the ages. Elena met us at our hotel and we walked to the museum, with her explaining various sights along the way with interesting snippets of history. After a quick visit to a souvenir shop and a stroll around the magnificent Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood, we entered the superb Mikhailovsky Palace, the main museum building built in the Neoclassical style. Some of the rooms are still wonderfully opulent. I highly recommend a visit to this museum as it is not as crowded as the Hermitage and one can develop an insight into how art in this country changed from the initial Byantine-inspired icons to the grand landscape canvases. Particularly arresting was the portrait of Peter the Great on his deathbed. After the visit, Elena kindly guided us to the Fabergé museum and also gave us directions to reach our hotel by foot afterwards. I believe having a personal tour guide enables one to learn so much more about the country due to the anecdotal information one gleans. Not to be missed!

4-Hour Walking Tour of Saint Petersburg's Feodor Dostoevsky | Jul 2018

This tour was one of the highlights of my 7 days in St Petersburg during the World Cup. Elena is an excellent guide with great knowledge of the city as it is now and was in Dostoevsky's time, the author's life and works and, specifically, Crime and Punishment. We walked the streets described so vividly in the novel, seeing so many of the buildings, bridges and canals from the book. An unexpected bonus was entering a courtyard off one of the streets and going inside an apartment block similar to those depicted in the book. One thing to be aware of is that the Dostoevsky Museum is closed on Monday so we couldn't incorporate that into the tour. Otherwise this tour could not be faulted. Since returning to Australia I have again re-read Crime and Punishment and the tour has further enhanced my appreciation of this extraordinary book. Many thanks Elena!

Two prisons on the two islands | Jun 2018

This tour was absolutely amazing. I actually happened to be the first one to take this tour as it's a new thing the company is trying out. I'm glad they did because it stuck out to me when I was browsing tours and excursions in St. Petersburg for something off the beaten track. My tour guide Elena was punctual, courteous and professional. She picked me up on time at my hotel and took me by car to the Peter and Paul Fortress. Though the tour was focused around prisons, Elena was happy to share her expertise on other sections of the Peter and Paul Fortress and also took me in to see the Church where the Romanovs are buried. When I mentioned I needed souvenirs for my family she even took me to a Russian souvenir shop not well known to tourists, so the items were cheaper. After that we drove about an hour to the Schisselburg Fortress, which we then arrived to by boat. We spent some time walking around the island and continued a tour of the prison there and learned about the former inmates and their living conditions. Elena is so well-versed in Russian history and the unique stories of these two prisons. She was also very pleasant to spend the day with. We had many laughs on the long drive to Schisselburg and back and had interesting conversations about life in America, where I'm from, and Russia. Though the plan on the itinerary was to drop me off at my hotel, Elena was happy to take me to the St. Isaac's Cathedral and told me how to skip the line to get in fast. I had a great time with her and was so pleased with her professionalism, expertise in the subject matter, and willingness to customize the trip per my interests. She mentioned she does other tours as well which I'm sure are great. I'd definitely book another tour with her again if I find myself in St. Pete. Thanks Elena for a great time!

Private Full-Day Trip to Velikiy Novgorod from St. Petersburg | Jän 2018

Novgorod is beautiful in the winter and our guide Elena was very professional and informative. She drove us herself in her new car which was very comfortable. If you have a day to spend, please visit Novgorod in a private tour like this one. We walked around without feeling rushed and visited unrestored churches. Elena suggested a nice usbek restaurant for lunch. After lunch, we visited a small monastery and spoke to her friend Father Dimitri, which is quite different from other tours.

The art collection in the Hermitage is almost unbelievable ... spent hours with the French Impressionists with a knowledgeable guide who, in addition to knowing art, knew how the beat the crowds. A truly special day.

Red Square and the Moscow Kremlin | Sep 2017

There is so much to see at the Kremlin and so much that is off-limits to tourists. We enjoyed seeing Red Square, and St. Basil's church. Several churches in the Kremlin were not open to the public, however. Always best to go with a guide.

Our guide Elena was fabulous. You could ask her a question about anything in Russia or St. Petersburg and their history and she would have an in-depth answer.
She went above and beyond on the tour to make it an interesting, rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone.

St Petersburg Small Group Tour of Tzarskoe Selo and Catherine Palace | Aug 2017

Well we had a small tour....it was just my friend and I with an art history major who was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic. She took us in her car and we really enjoyed the private tour. She showed us an Amber Museum that had such a variety of art work I was overwhelmed by the beauty and skill it took to make the items. She explained everything really well and answered all of our questions. We were able to go on our own pace and saw everything. She directed us to a nice shop with quality merchandise post tour. Then dropped us off at a special location so we could take a canal tour instead of back to the hotel which saved us a cab ride. Excellent choice.
