Small group tour is the way to go...

Small group tour is the way to go. Well worth your time and money. You should request and thank your lucky stars haah! if you meet THE guide Daisy. We were so lucky to have meet Daisy she truly is amazing, professional, kind, prepared, informed, and patient. The afternoon flew by since everyone was having such a wonderful time! Yay Science! Saw: Jupiter, 7 Sisters, The Moon, Orion Nebula, and two galaxies colliding 27 million light years away...um, yeah....wild, crazy, stuff!!! So hard to say goodbye to our new friends made on this trip. So hard to say goodbye to the sunset while on the summit - which is a once in a lifetime event. Don't pass this up.

Fantastic. Note there are many tour operators that do this same basic tour however I picked this one as it was the only one that picked up at my hotel. This is a small operator so watch out for minimum group size requirements. My dates were flexable so a call to them a few days in advance got me moved to another day where there were enough people to go, thanks! There are basically 3 parts to this tour: 1 stop at the visitor center at 9500ft to aclimate, we were offered a chance to do a short hike around the center for about 30min which was nice. 2 go to the summit for the sunset. We had about 30min up there which was enough to quickly walk around and get lots of pictures. 3 decend back to the visitor center for stargazing, we had about an hour There was 1 telescope setup prior to the assent that was aimed at the sun with a filter so you could see sunspots etc... The stargazing show is put on my staff at the center so anyone there from any of the many tours or just anyone that wants to driver up can attend. There were 5 telescopes setup outside. Best views were of orion nebula and jupiter! Lots of naration by the staff.

We thought this was a very nice trip. Our tour guide Daisy was very nice and was knowledgeable about the area. I would agree with some others that you may want to bring along something to snack on. The Cup of Soup and hot chocolate are nice to warm up with but not very filling for as long as you are on the tour. Plus the water at the viewing station wasn't hot enough to really cook the soup. No fault of the tour on that though. And yes dress warm!! You do only get basically a hoodie but do a little research before you go about the temperature up there. It's not the beach don't wear shorts.

The sunset at the top of the summit was amazing. But unfortunately the stargazing on that night was cancelled due to the haze from the fire that broke out.

Our dissatisfaction although that may be too strong a word was not with the tour guide, Daisy, or with the content of the tour. Both of those were terrific. However, we drove 45 minutes to meet the tour only to find out that she had already picked up two people who were staying near us. We could have done without the 45 minute ride especially at the end of the long tour. Also, there were 7 people along with the driver in a large SUV that seated 8 people. The people were really squished in the back seat, had little A/C and had trouble hearing the tour guide. In spite of that, sunset from Mauna Kea was spectacular and the stars a d commentary at the visitors' center was equally impressive.

We enjoyed a safe drive and comfortable accommodations in a 4WD Expedition SUV. Pickup was on time at our Hotel in Waikoloa which says alot already. We had friendly conversation with our guide both there and back. He also thoroughly explained why it was necessary to stay at the 9000 ft viewing area to acclimate to the altitude before going onto the 14,000 ft peak, where there is 40 less air oxygen than at 9000 ft. He was very attentive to my family as some of us still experienced the dizziness and shortness of breath associated with the altitude. Thank you After the sunset, we went back to the viewing area and waited for the dun to set and the stars to POP! So beautiful.

Edmund was an awesome guide!!! Very knowledgeable and fun too! Plus he was super nice about the fact that I'm afraid of heights and stayed away from the edge of the road as we went up to the summit.

This was a mixed experience. On the good side, we had fantastic weather and viewing conditions. Edmund, our driver, was informative and friendly. From other reviews, we understood that dinner would be a cup of ramen, so no surprises there. On the very bad side. the van we were in was awful. I think it was a 14-seater rental van, and it was very uncomfortable. Our group happened to be the last to be picked up, and a previous group was a spreader group where 3 people took up 5 seats. As a result, our group of five was jammed into the very back rows where we had a lot of trouble hearing Edmond on the inadequate sound system, and the heating/air conditioning didn't work very well you need both on this trip. A better van would have changed our review to 5 stars.

The tour was great as you can get very close to seeing the stars. The night becomes lighted with 1000s of stars. The Visitor center guide talks about the various stars and how the stars guided the ancient Hawaiins navigate the seas. The tour guide was knowledgeable and was very friendly and took some great pictures. However, I felt that the tour was too steeply priced and being served with a Soup for dinner was not good value for money.
