We got the information regarding start time and meeting place via the Viator app which was really useful, if you're booking through Viator (which we did for several day trips/excursions during our trip) then I would definitely recommend getting the app.

It was a very small group that we were with which made for a better experience in our opinion. We met at the meeting place and the guides were very welcoming and friendly. Our particular guide for the excursion, Shannon, was really friendly and approachable - nothing was too much trouble and she was more than happy to answer any questions or concerns that people in the group had throughout the trip.

We started at the Bone Chapel which was fascinating. Possibly not for the faint hearted - as the name suggests, lots of skeletons! - but that was not an issue for us. Also as the information on the page advises, make sure you dress appropriately and ensure shoulders and knees are covered. Don't worry too much if you forget though, as they sell ponchos at the chapel if you need them. Shannon gave us lots of information throughout and answered any questions, it was amazing just how much she knew and she seemed very passionate about the subject. She also let us stop at the gift shop for a little while afterwards before heading to our bus to go to the catacombs.

We got onto a small mini-bus and headed to the catacombs. On the way Shannon gave us more information about certain sights as we drove past them and we got to chat about the bone chapel and about what to expect at the catacombs. It turns out there are rules regarding tour guides entering the catacombs so a guy who worked there (I can't remember his name, sorry!) showed us around, but Shannon was there to answer any questions as well. The guy was really friendly and despite the grim nature of the catacombs he delivered the information is a fun and humorous way and really built a rapport with the group. As the name of the trip suggests, we went in after hours so there was only us and one other group in there which really added to the atmosphere and improved the experience.

Once we had finished the tour, we then got back on the mini-bus and returned to central Rome. On the way, Shannon again answered any questions and chatted to us all about places that she'd recommend visiting in Rome. She also gave us all advice about life in Rome and how to avoid tourist traps and get around on the public transport which was really helpful. Thank you Shannon!

Whilst macabre, this was an interesting tour with hindsight into early Christian practices and some background on life in early Rome. Our guide, Andre, was helpful, informative and quirky.

We booked a tour of the catacombs and bone chapel on Easter weekend. When we arrived at the meeting point, the tour guides seemed to be in a panic and calling people on the phone frantically. We were suddenly told that the bone chapel would be closed and we wouldn't be going there. We were not given an option to cancel and get our money back. We were only told that we would have to contact the booking company directly. The only reason I booked this tour was to see the bone chapel. Reluctantly we went on the tour as it seemed there was no real guarantee to get our money back. The tour guide was friendly and knowledgeable and the catacombs were very interesting. If an event is going to be closed due to a holiday, maybe dont book your tour that day. Everyone on the tour wanted to go to the bone chapel and everyone was disappointed.
I understand that the tour guides may not have known that this part of the tour would be closed, but at least give us an option to get our money back right then and there when the event we paid for is suddenly cancelled.

Great and very unusual experience! Antonella was an amazing guide. Two of our party felt intimidated and claustrophobic and were treated with utmost kindness and were allowed to wait in a safe warm area outside the catacombs. Well worth it as a once in a lifetime experience
