The Basics

A Cape Peninsula tour is the most popular way to visit Boulders Beach. Half- and full-day tours run from Cape Town and most include nearby attractions, such as Chapman’s Peak Drive, Cape Point, the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, or Camps Bay. Some tours include a cruise out to Seal Island to discover more of the peninsula’s wildlife, explore the Cape Peninsula by bike, or enjoy a wine tasting in the Constantia Valley.

The beach is split into the northern part, accessed via the Boulders Visitors Centre and offering a purpose-built boardwalk from which to watch the penguins in their natural habitat, and the southern part, which is open for swimming.

Literally conquered a mountain... Well 2 points to be specific
This was an amazing full day trip and Charles the guide, alongside Wendy the Hostess and Stevie the driver made the day even better. Zero regrets about the hike, saw such natural beauty and met a lovely fellow solo female traveller to chat with. A memorable day that will stay with me forever

Great morning tour with Prince

Penguin Encounter Boulders Beach Half Tour Day from Cape Town
We had an amazing morning exploring Boulders beach and the beautiful bays of Cape Town with Prince. He was a very friendly guide and a safe driver, who we felt we could trust and enjoy the tour with. We were lucky to have the tour to ourselves and so could spend as long or short a time at each stop which was perfect for us. Finishing at the V&A waterfront for lunch was great timing and meant we could make the most of our day! Thank you!

Great tour, great guide but lunch takes far too long

Cape Point and Boulder's Beach Penguins Full Day Tour
Wonderful day out & great guide, the only thing that I would change is the lunch option, we were given 2 hours to have lunch and then walk down 15' to see the penguins at Boulders Beach, however more than 1 hour was taken up by the lunch as the restaurant was extremely slow, leaving only about 30' for the main attraction. Either the tour organisers can sort this out (eg arranging a set menu in advance or taking food orders on the bus) or I would recommend you bring a sandwich along.

Amazing trip! Mike was so knowledgeable and accommodating, we could not have spent the day with a nicer person. His suggestions were impeccable and we would have missed so many sights and experiences should we not have been with him! Cannot recommend enough. Thank you Mike.

Private Sightseeing Trip to the Cape of Good Hope and Boulders Penguin Colony
Xavier went above and beyond to make this tour so special. He was knowledgeable, funny, and was a fantastic companion to spend the morning with. What we loved so much was the ability to customize the tour based on our preferences and schedule. Outstanding experience all thanks to Xavier! A must if you’re in the Cape Town area!

FULL Day Cape of Good Hope and Boulders Penguin Colony
We had an amazing tour guide to begin with: Leticia. She was so knowledgeable, accommodating and kept us laughing and entertained. We learned a lot about South African History and culture to go with the places visited. The trip was unbelievably scenic and is highly recommended to others.

Fun half day tour to see all the Cape Point sites

Half day am or pm Boulders Beach & Penguins with visit to Cape Point Great tour
We had Ryan as our fun and knowledgeable guide. He picked us up promptly and helped us out by dropping us off at our dinner spot instead of our hotel. We took an afternoon tour and during the tour we were able to take Chapman’s drive, we visited Cape Point including the funicular ride, then Cape of Good Hope, and Boulder Beach. We were too late to go to the Boulder Beach but we were still able to see some penguins. Ryan allowed us to take our time to ensure we were able to see everything we wanted. We were very happy with this your!

Penguins At Boulders Beach, Simonstown from Cape Town
Seeing the penguins was fantastic! Mike Brown was an excellent tour guide and went over and above to tell us about Cape Town and to make sure we had excellent recommendations for other things to do during our visit.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The entrance fee for the boardwalk goes toward conservation efforts.

  • It’s prohibited to touch, feed, or interact with the penguins, although the boardwalks will take you close enough to get some great photos.

  • Parking at the beach is limited, especially in peak season (December–January), so arrive early to secure a spot.

  • The boardwalk is wheelchair and stroller accessible.

When to Get There

It’s possible to spot penguins at Boulders Beach year-round but breeding season from February until August is the most interesting time to watch them. The highest numbers of penguins can be seen in the early morning or late afternoon, as the animals spend much of the day feeding out at sea.

The Boulders Beach Penguin Colony

The Boulders Beach African penguin colony grew from two breeding pairs that settled there in the early 1980s. The population is now more than 3,000, although numbers have declined in recent years. Nicknamed “jackass penguins” for the braying sounds they make, African penguins are an endangered species found along the Namibian and South African coast. Boulders Beach is the only place in Africa where you can enjoy watching the penguins roam freely in their natural environment.
