The traditional paper masks, as distinct and recognizable as the full moon during the Mid-Autumn festival, has for years been a favorite traditional toy among Vietnamese children. During the night of the festival, gleeful children parade around the neighborhood wearing colorful paper masks as they carry with them bobbing lanterns to illuminate the streets - a sort of trick or treat equivalent during Halloween. Families join in the celebration while the young ones bring life to the artfully crafted masks that are at once both colorful and representative of the festivities of the night.

"Yen Thai Silk, Bat Trang Pottery, Dinh Cong Silver, Ngu Xa Copper" is the quintessential quarters of the Thang Long trade village. Through its history, the village has seen several drastic changes take place to its people, culture, tradition and crafts but silversmithing in Dinh Cong is one of the few ancient crafts of Thang Long (old name of Hanoi) that still exists today. Located on the To Lich river bank in Hanoi's Hoang Mai district, approximately 10km from Hoan Kiem Lake), Dinh Cong village has long term history of silver handcrafts. According to the legend, in King Ly Nam De's reign, three brothers of the Tran family (Tran Dien, Tran Hoa and Tran Dien) learned how to make silver and gold jewelries by chance, mastered the skills and then passed this on to the local people of the village and created the reputation of Dinh Cong's products. The products are not just beautiful but also have a masterful finish.

You might have noticed the little hole-in-the-wall shops cluttered around the Old Quarters, tended to by a single craftsmen, hunched and dedicatedly carving sophisticated designs on little wooden blocks. Wooden stamps, or historically, the art of seal making was borrowed from China and was used by kings and aristocrats during the feudal times in Vietnam. More than a 1000 years later, the art yet lives, but has morphed into the wooden stamps we know today, elegantly managing to stay relevant with the times.
