Make your own way to the visitor center at Mountain Thunder Coffee Plantation to meet your guide. Start your visit with complimentary tastings of Kona coffee and Hawaiian tea as you watch a Discovery Channel show about the coffee-making process from seed to cup, filmed at Mountain Thunder’s Kaloko cloud forest farm and mill.

Next up, see the farm and mill in person after a short walk through the cloud forest to the coffee orchard. Learn how Kona coffee is grown, and pick and taste the sweet red coffee fruit, which grows in a lush Ohia rain forest setting.

At the ocean view lookout, you can also feed the farm's Kona nightingale donkeys, Saint Croix sheep, Muscovy ducks, Toulouse geese, white Chinese geese and a pet pig. You might also spot resident wildlife such as parrots, pheasants, quail, peacocks, chickens and Hawaiian hawks (ka’io).

Return to the visitor center for a short break before going to the wet mill to learn how the coffee fruit is pulped, then fermented and dried. Continue to the dry mill where the hulling, sizing, grading and sorting takes place, resulting in different grades of Kona coffee.

Have lunch, then start your ‘Roast Master for a Day’ class. Chat with the current state of Hawaii barrista champion and learn how to roast your own coffee. At the end of your class, you can take home a complimentary half pound bag of the coffee you roasted.
