Make your own way to check-in at the Reef Fleet Terminal for the morning departure of the Fitzroy Island high-speed ferry crossing, which generally takes around 45 minutes.
Located only 18.5 miles (30 km) from Cairns, Fitzroy Island lies within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Its protected coral reef offers excellent snorkeling from the beach and is home to colorful hard and soft corals, tropical fish, sea turtles and other marine life.
Spend the day as you wish, with options that include snorkeling, swimming and kicking back on the beach. The underwater world offers the rainbow colors of the parrotfish, clown fish darting in and out of anemones, and many other marine critters. On land, you can follow hiking trails through the rainforest and along the coast.
Upgrade to the Activity Pass, a cost-effective option that includes the use of snorkel gear, stand-up paddle boards, paddle skis and a floating ocean trampoline, plus a glass-bottom boat tour and a delicious picnic lunch. Depending on availability, you can use water floats and other gear for children, making this a family-friendly way option on the island.
At the end of the day, return on the ferry to Cairns where your tour ends.
Fitzroy Island Adventures with Raging Thunder
Enjoy Fitzroy Island with Raging Thunder. Relax on the beach or explore the island and walk to the summit. Glass bottom boat is available or snorkelling equipment.
Fitzroy island is absolutely beautiful! If you want to snorkel definitely go on either side of the pier to the big rocks on each side. We saw 4 turtles, a couple of blue spotted rays, and a vast array of fish. Even a couple of white tip reef sharks but they scare easily so don’t worry about them. Getting gear at the beach hut was easy and the staff of raging thunder were very nice and informative. The lunch they provide was delicious! I would say check out Nudey beach because it’s a great beach area and more secluded but if you want to snorkel don’t do it there because there isn’t much reef within the nudey beach section. My only bad review is that they need better snorkels, they tend to leak. So if you can bring your own snorkels, I’d say do that, at least until they upgrade.
Great experience. Everything included which was easy from start to finish. Snorkeling was difficult as there were rough water conditions the day we went but till able to see some coral and fish. Warning for families with young children or elderly - the '20 min walk' to Nudey beach is very steep and lots of steps/rock platforms.
Very cool place, helpful staff! Just feels slightly overpriced for ferry transfer only. Several options to add excursions/activities at extra cost if you’re interested, which may be a better bang for your buck.
Thanks to the crew for a really great trip to beautiful Fitzroy Island. We really enjoyed the snorkelling and saw lots of fish and coral. So glad we chose this trip. The island is stunning and the turtle sanctuary well worth a visit too.
Gorgeous island! The beaches have coral so need shoes to walk around. Nice hikes available. Recommend snorkel safari - extra charge but a marine biologist will snorkel with your group to describe the types of coral and animals that you see. We snorkeled near nudey beach on other side of the island and there was a lot of coral variety- including an amazing blue one! Had to wear stinger suits due to the time of year. Liked the glass bottom boat as well! Turtle hospital unfortunately was closed the day we were there. Amazing drinks at Foxys with a nice view to relax.
Just a short ride from Cairns lies a beautiful Tropical paradise just waiting to be discovered. You can do as much or as little as you like, great food and beach bar with a view too die for. You must make the trek to Nudey Beach - unforgettable.
Fitzroy Island is full of beauty, something amazing around every corner. We swam with 4 sea turtles and hundreds of tropical reef fish in the reefs just off the beach. Picnic was catered really well also.
