Peacock Trail Walking Tour in Mylapore
See the sites of Chennai and learn about local culture
We had a wonderful guide and despite turning up to somewhere we had never been before it was out first morning in India, our guide found us pretty quickly amongst the crowds of people arriving to visit the Temple. We had a very personal service and great introduction to India. It was all capped off with a lovely breakfast and south-Indian coffee, which I can whole-heatedly recommend. We were also given a local cafe/restaurant recommendation for a place near our hotel, Chamier, which despite not selling alcohol, is a great place to eat. Mylapore and the Temple is an amazing place, as is Chennai, and really tests our senses, both from an historical perspective, but also from the sheer number of people and the chaos that creates on the roads etc. We had a wonderful tour and happy to recommend highly.
The Mylapore tour was wonderful! We learned so much about local and Hindu culture and traditions while exploring the temple and church. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and clear. We had been to many temples and cities before but never understood as much as we did while taking this tour. Well worth it!
We had a really great tour and Lakshmi our guide was amazing. I am a native of chennai and spent 25 years in Chennai before moving to the USA and very familiar with Mylapore but decided to take the tour for our American friends instead of giving them my own home brewed version. That was the best decision that I made. The tour was very informative and structured very well. The tour of the Hindu temple priests house is a really unique experience and the tour also took us to St. Thomas church which I had never visited and did not realize that it commemorated one of the apostles. Very well narrated and organized. Will fully recommend it for tourists and natives.
Aquilla not sure of spelling was one of the best tour guides I have had in any country. She had a wealth of knowledge about the history of India but also stories to keep it personal and fun. Enjoyed the temple, priest's house and Thomas the Apostle church. It was a lovely 2 hours and I left feeling I knew much more about India and the culture of the South and North. Will recommend to anyone traveling to Chennai. Did not realize that Mary had such an extensive wardrobe as she does in India.
This is the best thing to do to get to know that part of the city, the Mylapore neighborhood, and the Kapaleeshwarar temple. Akeelah is a great guide who is amazing at giving you the history of the place in a great story-telling way, she'll take you around the temple and explain the traditions, tell stories about the history of the major sites and the people living there. She took me to the template, the tank, the Santhome church and didn't forget to take me a on a tuk tuk ride and treated me to a great Dosa and Smabar, she is the perfect tour/walk companion, I high recommend this tour to everyone going through chennai!
If you have limited time and you want to really understand India this is a perfect tour for you. Our guide was speaking very good English and she really had a feeling how present a story to be attractive. Beside temple we also visited priest home, took a riksha, visited St. Thomas church and take a snack with coffee in a restaurant. I really loved it.
I flew into Chennai to attend a wedding. Because my trip was so brief, I had one free day a walking tour sounded like the perfect way to explore the city. The Peacock Walking Tour takes you to two well known places in Mylapore - Arulmigu Kapaleeswarar Temple and San Thome Basilica - but it's a great way to learn about the history and people of Chennai. Vijay was a charismatic and knowledgeable guide, and the group was small and leisurely enough to allow for plenty of Q and A. My favorite part was meeting a temple priest in his own home, a nice addition that other tours do not offer. The dosa and coffee at the end of a tour capped off a perfect afternoon.
A real pleasure! The tour completely lived up to expectations.
From the outset Veejay our guide set a light humorous tone yet gave us excellent historical detail and charming folksy stories.
As we ambled around the area he answered many questions and explained all sorts of sights as we passed them.
We particularly liked the way he positioned himself and his family in the mix so that there was a closer attachment to the culture in front of us.
We shall use this company in Madurai if we can.
