Booked this rather expensive (c£158) trip online days before from abroad, but notified of details only the night before. This caused uncertainty & some unnecessary anxiety. On the day, without warning, we were supplemented with a trio of additional visitors who spoke only a third language, hence tour was encumbered by need to translate every statement from the guide.
The guide was knowledgeable, but poor at connecting with group, presumed recondite knowledge of archaeology & negatively referred to her job as ‘Mickey Mouse’. The tour was rushed (max 1 hour) and little allowance made for well educated but ignorant visitors (needed much more on basic information - eg economic basis of settlement, longevity of people, reasons for collapse of Knossos - and delivery at less than breakneck speed)
Our full package trip meant we were taken from Knossos after one hour with the guide to be delivered back to our hotel. Much better to have left us there to look round carefully at what we had seen. In hindsight we recommend: go early & buy your own tickets (16 euros), take a bus/taxi to the site, hire a guide at the gate & give yourself a full morning to see the wonders of Knossos. The full package of collect at hotel & personal guide is expensive & can be rather disappointing.
