My Son Sanctuary
One of the most stunning sights to see in Hoi An area is My Son, Vietnam’s most important site of the ancient kingdom of Champa. Between the 4th and 13th century a unique culture which owed its spiritual origins to Indian Hinduism developed on the coast of contemporary Vietnam. This is graphically illustrated by the remains of a series of impressive tower-temples located in a dramatic site that was the religious and political capital of the Champa Kingdom for most of its existence. Located in the heart of a beautiful valley and surrounded by high mountains ranges My Son was named a Cultural Heritage site by UNESCO in 1999. Originally built with wood, they were completely destroyed by fire in the 6th century and restored in the 7th century by Sambhuvarman who rebuilt the temples with locally made bricks. Up to the 13th century, more than 70 similar temples were built, establishing My Son as a sanctuary of Hinduism in the Champa Kingdom.
The My Son Sanctuary is a remarkable architectural ensemble that developed over a period of ten centuries. It presents a vivid picture of spiritual and political life in an important phase of the history of South-East Asia.
Husband and I booked morning tour on May 2. Was hoping to start early as planned (7.30am) but was told the night before that pick-up time was to be pushed back to 8am to accommodate 2 additional persons in the group. The ride to My Son in the last row of the MPV was very uncomfortable with very limited headroom and legroom. However, fortunately or unfortunately, because the driver drove very fast, we were able to get there in about 45 minutes. It was a hair-raising ride with quite a few near misses when the driver kept driving on the opposite direction of the road.
However, our guide "Thai" saved the day. He was most attentive and professional. The trip to My Son became a very enriching experience because of his in-depth knowledge of the place and history behind the ruins. He was also an excellent communicator. He literally made history come alive for us!
We highly recommend this tour. Just a tip to share: We skipped the cultural show and went to the first ruins cluster to take photos before the crowd descended on the place after the show. Our guide joined us after that to give us the guided tour.
Appalling service. Collected at 7:15 in Hoi An, driven to a Da Nang hotel and then on unwanted tour of marble shop - didn't arrive at My Son til 9:45! Only saw 2/7 sites and had to leave at 11. Paid £55 for a 3.5 hour minivan ride and
