Discover a seldom-seen part of Kauai from aboard an inner tube on this backcountry adventure. Choose from four different departure times to suit your schedule, then make your way to Hanamaulu to meet your guide. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting wet, and gear up with a provided helmet, headlamp and gloves.

Ride in an off-road vehicle through the tropical island interior while learning about the history of the 200-year-old Lihue Plantation; now shuttered, it was one of the first sugar plantations in Hawaii. You’ll arrive at an extensive network of irrigation canals that crisscross the 17,000-acre (6,880-hectare) plantation. These ditches and tunnels were dug by hand in the 1870s and have only recently been opened to the public.

After a safety briefing, climb aboard an inner tube and set out on the gentle currents of the waterways. No paddling is required, so the ride is suitable for all fitness levels. Sit back and relax through lazy open stretches and exciting flumes, and switch on your headlamp as you pass through dark tunnels as long as 1 mile (1.6 km).

At the end of your ride, refuel with a picnic lunch and enjoy the lush, historic setting of the plantation. If you like, cool off with a swim in a natural pool before the return drive to the departure point.

Please Note: When making your booking, please put all passenger weights in the ‘special requirements’ section. If you have children in your group, please specify their ages in this section as well.
