Learn about life under Soviet rule as you explore the area initially designed as a model Soviet city. Top off your tour with a drink at the iconic Stylowa restaurant.
  • 4-hour tram and walking tour of Krakow’s Nowa Huta district, with an expert guide
  • Ride a tram to this eastern suburb, a model Soviet city built after World War II
  • View the Central Square, monumental Soviet buildings and tenement blocks
  • See the bomb shelters and a WWII tank that remain from the Cold War era
  • Visit the Lord’s Ark, the Noah’s Ark-shape church demanded by Nowa’s peoples in the 1960s
  • Enjoy a drink in the legendary Stylowa restaurant, little changed from communist times
  • Learn about life under communism and how Nowa led anti-Soviet resistance in the 1980s
Meet your guide at your hotel in Krakow and, after a brief walk, catch a tram to the Nowa Huta neighborhood. As you travel east, learn more about the history behind the district, initially designed as a model Soviet city in the postwar era.
Upon arriving, check out the Soviet architecture in the main square and hear about the district's colossal steelworks program, from which it takes its name. Discover how the area became a stronghold for the anti-Soviet resistant movement and see where Lenin's statue once stood.
Pause to relax with a complimentary drink inside the legendary Stylowa restaurant, the most opulent establishment at one time. Soak up the atmosphere of the era as you study the interior décor, hardly touched since communist times.
Afterward, hit the streets to explore, passing a Cold War tank, air raid shelters and the old Sphinx cinema, built to provide entertainment in the Soviet period.
See the People’s Theatre, where the community staked a cross to demand a Catholic church in 1960. Then, continue to the impressive Lord’s Ark Church, constructed as a result of the protest.
Your 4-hour tour will conclude with a tram ride back to Krakow, followed by drop-off at your hotel.

The tour was fantastic. The guide had a genuine interest in the tour and his passion for the area and history was infectious. I learnt so much about the local area of Nowa Huta and the history of Poland in general. Speaking to somebody who lived in the Communist era readjusted my views.

Great trip, fascinating. Our guide Jacek was very knowledgable and passionate about the history of the area, and a lovely guy too!

This tour was just fantastic and the guide was very knowledgeable and planned a good variety of things to see. He had lived in the area his entire life, I believe. As it turned out, no one else signed up for the tour but me on the day I took it, so I got a private tour. Some companies would just cancel, I imagine, so I appreciate that. I wish I had gotten the guide's name, but forgot, but the company was Cracow Tours, I believe. For some odd reason, they don't seem to list this tour on their website, only one of those old car tours which seem to appeal to tourists who want some gimmicks. I didn't want gimmicks, and didn't even really want to ride in one of those. I am very interested in WWII history and really wanted a more serious and informative tour, which I got. I'm not sure how that works the car ones as the entire time we just walked around Nova Huta lots of walking, be warned, but all flat, but we took the tram to/from it. I actually wanted that as I had just arrived and wanted to find out a bit more about how the tram system worked, so it was quite useful for that, also. So highly recommend this tour and Viator's communication with the company, everythign went smoothly. Only note is that they do NOT pick you up at any hotel, I think there is a list on here of the ones they may, so I did have to walk to meet them in the morning to the nearest one they used, maybe .25 to .33 mile. I didn't mind but if that would bother someone, try to check that out ahead of time, if they will pick you up at your hotel or not. My hotel was deep into the Old Town so it would have wasted a lot of time anyway, as the meeting point hotel was right near the tram stop we used.

An amazing walk highly recommended. The guide was knowledgable, willing and able to answer all questions and really get you into the spirit of how things were back at communist times.

This tour was interesting and fun. The guide, Jacek, was excellent. He grew up in Nowa Huta, so he had first hand knowledge of the area. Barbara from Canada

This tour might sound a bit dull, especially if you know what Nowa Huta means New Steelworks but it was very interesting and well worth doing. Especially as our guide lived in one of the austere block of flats and was extremely enthusiastic and informative. It provided an insight into life under the post-war communist regime and some of the grievances that clearly still exist.

A knowledgeable, passionate, professional guide who made this tour memorable. Definitely worth a visit, something different from usual Krakow touristic stuff

One of the best tours i have done. An excellent guide who grew up in the area and so knew it very well. An excellent insight to a recent historical period.

Very good tour with a lovely young lady. She was very interesting and knowledgable and as we were in a small group it was easy to ask questions and chat casually. Well worth the money

En virkelig fin oplevelse for dem som interesserer sig for politik og historie. Og vi have den sødeste guide Jack som var vokset op i området - og som havde valgt at blive boende dér, også som voksen.
