Overview

Have an interesting tour with the guide whose ancestors have lived in the area of Jiellevárre since ancient times. The Sami people have been living off reindeer herding, hunting, fishing, picking berries and herbs. The reindeer has and still provides not only meat but also materials for making clothes and objects from bone and antler.

At the turn of the century 1700, the first settlers arrived for farming and in the mid-century, a church was built along Váhtjerjåhkå with the intention to Christianise the Sami people.

In late 1800 the iron ore mining started and a huge amount of Swedish speaking people was settled down in the area which has had an impact on the culture and the language of the Samis.

The tour will end at the top of Váhtjerduottar (Dundret) the mountain close to Gällivare with a view over the areas that have been used by the Samis for reindeer herding since ancient time.
