Tikal is an absolutely amazing place! It is, without doubt, not to be missed by anyone with an interest in Mayan civilization or a passion for ancient cultures. The park is massive and the sights are awe-inspiring. A good deal of walking is involved and, if you're up to it -- and you should be! -- climbing some of the oldest structures in the Western Hemisphere. You'll love it!

On the not-so-positive side are the following:

1. We were scheduled to be picked up at 4:00 a.m. for a 6:30 a.m. flight. Why? Our hotel was only 10 minutes from the airport and domestic Security took no more than 5 minutes. So, we had nearly 2 hours to wait. Not a good way to begin the day.

2. After the flight, the bus trip from the airport to Tikal took about an hour. There was a stop for shopping at a roadside store devoted to tourists. I get the reason for it, but I could have done without it.

3. There were 2 tour guides on the bus, one for English-speakers and one for Spanish-speakers. Knowing both languages, it was clear that one tour guide had more information and was far more engaging than the other. This was a distraction, especially when I ended up with the less engaging of the two due to my wife's less-than-fluent knowledge of Spanish.

4. Our tour guide, while filled with facts, was not at all engaging nor entertaining. Worse, we learned next to nothing about what life was like for those who lived in Tikal. This is a key reason my rating of the trip is not higher.

5. We were given lunch at 2:00 p.m. NOTHING was provided before. No water, no snack, no fruit. This seems to be an important oversight. Lessons should be taken from Costa Ricans, who would have been appalled by the lack of graciousness shown on this tour.

6. The flight back to Guatemala City was the last hurdle. Our flight was delayed by about an hour, with no communication provided about when we were to leave or IF we were to leave. Someone from Viator should have been present to quell our anxieties.

In sum, Tikal is a marvelous place to visit but bring patience, food and drink and hope for a good tour guide.
