What To Expect

After you’re picked up at your hotel, settle in aboard a comfortable coach with panoramic windows and begin your Milford Sound tour from Queenstown. This day trip departs the shore of Lake Wakatipu, situated against the jagged backdrop of the Remarkables mountain range, and makes a stop in Te Anau for morning tea (own expense).

On arrival at the World Heritage–listed Fiordland National Park, step off the coach at the Mirror Lakes. Snap photos of this natural roadside attraction before passing through the Hollyford Valley. Your coach then enters the Homer Tunnel, emerging above the Cleddau Valley, where you’ll follow a footbridge over the Cleddau River to the Chasm to view the river’s turbulent whirlpools.

Upon reaching Milford Sound, board the luxurious catamaran. Throughout the 1.5-hour sightseeing cruise, listen to expert commentary about the pristine environment and natural landmarks such as Mitre Peak. Rising dramatically to a height of 5,551 feet (1,692 meters) above sea level, it’s one of many towering cliffs carved by a massive glacier in the last ice age.

Pass cascading waterfalls, and search for birdlife and marine mammals including New Zealand fur seals in addition to penguins and pods of dolphins. Gourmet Buffet lunch is included on your cruise, before you’re returned by coach to your Queenstown hotel.

Tour never happened!

The roads washed out and you sold us a tour afterwards. The roads do not open for another two weeks. Why are you still selling these tours? When will our money be refunded?

Best tour!

We had a marvellous time on our Milford Sound tour. So glad we could sit back on the bus and enjoy the driver’s commentary. We wouldn’t have learned as much about the area if we had driven ourself. And the boat tour was tremendous. Way beyond expectations. Such a great boat with so much room to move around and see the sights from different vantage points. I highly recommend this tour!

Milford Sound, and the coach tour to get there are absolutely amazing!

The boat was ok, due to a small number of tourists, it was manageable to see everything. The lunch was inedible. Most dishes used the same chili pepper flake that overpowered any flavor.

Milford Sound Experience

A wonderful visit to Milford sound via 'Graylines Coaches' Coach Captain Singh was a wealth of information with his commentary and made several scenic stops along the way to break up 4 hours of travel each way. Brilliant, picturesque and exciting day with the tour group.

A long day but so worth it

I don't know why I didn't research this, but it is a 5 hour drive each way from Queenstown to the Milford sound. This makes for a long day sitting on the bus so prepare yourself. However, this does not detract from the amazing experience you will have at the Milford Sound. What a breathtakingly beautiful place. The boat we were on was newer and very nice. I'd say my only complaint about the experience is that there isn't much organization when lunch is served. Everyone rushes the tiny kitchen at once and I ended up waiting in line for the first quarter of the boat ride! The last thing I wanted to do was be inside where I couldn't see the sites. I personally feel if they sent people to the lunch buffet in smaller, organized groups it would be much more efficient.

Awesome trip, beautiful views.

We took the bus trip in early December. Eric was our driver and he was amazing. He is very knowledgeable and told wonderful stories along the route. The trip to Milford was almost 5 hours but with a few stops for food and pictures made the trip was very pleasant. The bus was very comfortable. Milford Sound was spectacular. Beautiful views and amazing scenery. The lunch was very nice, food was quite tasty on the Juicy Tour boat. Eric was kind enough to explain the helicopter option for the return trip to Queenstown. We took the helicopter and it was an adventure of a lifetime. The stop on the mountain top was something to always remember. Thank you for a great experience.

Good tour.It was really a coach journey from Queenstown to Milford Sound and a boat ride (an half and a half) in Milford sound. Hassle free and on time. Bus driver was a Frenchman giving quite a lot of interesting information on the area, history etc.

Landscape that imprints in your mind

The cruise with transfer from Queenstown was more than perfectly organised and the bus driver was entertaining us with endless stories about the area. The trip, the vessel and the food is worth it. You will miss a lot of things if you go on your own. But then what I didn’t like was that we arrived after a few hours bus trip hungry for lunch and we took a lot of time in a line to the buffet whereas the yacht already sailed out and the captain was already describing the place - we either didn’t hear him well, didn’t see the landscape nor we ate yet... then of course the most tricky part is the weather ... it’s one of the most rainy areas in the world and don’t expect it to be warm either - it is necessary to take some wind/water-proof clothing. All in all it is a trip you should not miss and you will be travelling in perfect conditions.
