Select your departure time on booking, and on the day, dress warmly; donning two or three layers, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy hiking boots or hiking shoes.
Then, travel independently to the start point of your tour at Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon. This large glacial lake is strewn with floating icebergs and sits beneath the Vatnajokull Glacier, Europe’s largest ice cap, in the wilds of southeast Iceland.
Meet up with your guide and small group of no more than eight travelers, and board a rugged 4x4 for your drive to the ice cave. Absorb the views as you traverse the rocky, snowy, and icy landscapes to the edges of the Vatnajokull Glacier. The glacier boasts several ice caverns, and the cave you visit will be selected according to weather and other environmental conditions, with safety as a top priority.
Hop out of the 4x4 near the cave, and don the provided caving equipment, including crampons and a helmet. Then, after a safety briefing, make the short hike to the cave's mouth.
Follow your guide inside to experience the ethereal, underground world of ice. Marvel at the billions of blue and white hues that shimmer from every direction, and gaze at the cathedral-like structures, all of them naturally formed. Hear how they are created as the meltwaters of each spring freeze, and how each cave is newly formed each winter as a result.
Explore the cavernous spaces with your guide for around 40 minutes, and then make your way back into the open air. Return to your 4x4, take off your caving gear, and ride back to the lagoon, where your once-in-a-lifetime tour concludes.
