Your tour begins with an early morning pickup from your Yogyakarta hotel in time for an 8am departure. After being matched with a suitable bike, saddle up for a leisurely 4-hour bike ride to Kota Gede.
See a different side to Yogyakarta, as you pedal through the residential districts, stopping to admire historic monuments and beautiful colonial architecture along the way. Pass through the villages of Bumen and Kembang Waru, where you’ll have chance to browse the handicrafts shops or sample local specialties (own expense) such as bread baked in the shape of a hibiscus flower.
On arrival in Kota Gede, listen as your guide tells you the fascinating history of the neighborhood, which is both an important Islamic center and famous for its silver industry. Stop to admire the Kota Gede mosque, one of the oldest in the city, dating back to 1575, before continuing to the main attraction – the Royal Cemetery. Before heading inside, you’ll be required to don a traditional Javanese dress (included) – a sign of respect for those buried in the grand cemetery, most importantly the King of Mataram and his family.
On the way back to the city center, stop to admire a ‘Joglo’ – a traditional Javanese house that blends colonial architecture with typical Indonesian design.
At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel.
