The Basics

Travelers come to Meteora to visit the six operational monasteries and walk the many trails in the area. To get the most out of your visit, book a guided tour which will offer historical context. Full-day tours depart from Athens or Thessaloniki to Meteora, or you can make your own way to Kalampaka to enjoy a half-day group, private, or sunset excursion. Adventurous travelers can also embark on a hike or enjoy a rafting trip down the River Ionas.

Tour guide contacted us regarding bad weather later in the day to see if we wanted to start the tour earlier - which we did. The tour guide and driver were excellent and very knowledgeable !!! The luxury van was clean and new. Meteora was beautiful. Highly recommend this tour company due to excellent customer service and our great experience.

Our driver George went above and beyond to take us to see the sunset in Meteora even though that was not on the itinerary. It was breathtaking and highlight of our trip! He was also a very good and safe driver. Highly recommended!

Two Days Rail Tour to Meteora from Athens
The train ride was nice to see the countryside of Greece. Seeing part of Meteora at night and the rest in the morning was a nice balance. The guides were very knowledgeable and the time to see each monestary was sufficient. A very nice trip all around.

METEORA - 2 Days by Train from Athens - including 2 Guided Meteora tours - Daily
The actual tours of Meteora were excellent. I would give five stars except our train ride to Meteora was replaced by a bus ride due to May Day celebration. The train ride back was much better than the bus.

2-Day Delphi and Meteora Tour from Athens
We had 2 different guides, one for Delphi and the other for Meteora. They were both great, they gave us a lot of information as we were traveling on the bus and then more specific information when we were on the sites. They kept us fully informed about the schedule, and the schedule was well adhered to.

Full-day trip to Meteora by train from Athens in English or Spanish
We had a great time experiencing the Meteora. Our guide Yannis was very informative and our bus driver (I forgot his name) made the entire trip quite enjoyable. Both of them are from the area which was a plus. Yannis was very knowledgeable and amusing. The two of them make a great team. We had a private family tour. I would highly recommend them. Then train ride wasn't too bad, we did upgrade to 1st class, the seats were very comfortable, and private. It was a great adventure.

METEORA - 2 Days by Train from Athens - including 2 Guided Meteora tours - Daily
Harry and rhea were excelent tour guides, they were very informative and taught us alot about the prehistoric, mythological, and historical background of the area. The hotel also had a delicious breakfast and held our bags for us during the second tour. Definitely would recommend this company and the two day tour to anyone interested in getting an intimate look at kalabaka and meteora. (ps. Bring good shoes or boots for the monasteries and be ready for alot of walking and beautiful views)

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Wear comfortable shoes, bring sunscreen and water, and prepare to walk—all but one of the monasteries is reached by steep steps.

  • Visitors to the monasteries must have their shoulders and knees covered, and wraps are provided at the entrance.

  • The best options for restaurants and cafés are in Kalampaka, so bring a packed lunch if you plan to spend the day.

  • Be sure to check the opening days and times of the monasteries in advance as they vary.

  • Plan to visit two or three monasteries on a day tour—to visit all six, you will need a 2-day tour.

  • St. Stephen's Monastery (Agios Stephanos) is the only wheelchair-accessible monastery.

How to Get There

Meteora is located in Thessaly, about 220 miles (355 kilometers) northwest of Athens, and is accessible by road from the towns of Kalampaka and Kastraki, just to the south. Guided tours often start from Athens, while direct buses and trains run to Kalambaka from Athens, Thessaloniki, and Delphi.

When to Get There

The monasteries are open year-round, but each is closed on a different day, so it’s important to plan ahead. July to October are most popular, and to avoid the crowds, opt for a morning tour. Out-of-season visitors encounter lower entrance fees and fewer crowds, while hikers should come in May or June, before the worst summer heat.

Meteora’s Big Six

Meteora’s cliff-top monasteries were built by Eastern Orthodox hermit monks who settled in the area in the ninth century. Most visitors make a beeline for the Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, the largest, oldest, and highest, located at around 2,000 feet (615 meters). There’s also Varlaam Monastery, founded in the 14th century by Hosios Varlaam; the dramatically situated Holy Trinity Monastery; Monastery of St. Nicholas Anapausas, renowned for its spectacular frescoes; the 16th-century Monastery of Rousanou; and the most easily accessible, St. Stephen’s.
