There are fabulous ruins, national parks and a pretty lake all situated in or close by Polonnaruwa. Polonnaruwa was the capital of the central plains of Sri Lanka 800 years ago. There are hundreds of ancient structures – palaces, temples, tombs, statues, it’s all here in a relatively compact space which makes it very easy to explore, especially with kids. For three centuries it was the royal capital, of both the Chola and Sinhalese kingdoms. In Polonnaruwa, it all started in the late 10th century when the South Indian Chola dynasty had conquered Sri Lanka. On this tour you can visit Somawathi Chathya also which is very ols temple. In the early 13th century the cities glory was fading, it was abandoned, and the capital moved to the western side of the island where Colombo is today.
