On this 391-square-mile (1,013-square-kilometer) island, the landscape is the main attraction. Freshwater lakes, towering dunes, sandy beaches, and dense rain forest provide the backdrop for all kinds of outdoor adventures. From hiking to water sports, here are a few of the top outdoor activities on offer on Australia’s Fraser Island.
Hiking
Fraser Island is crisscrossed by hiking trails that allow visitors to immerse themselves in their surroundings, breathing in the fresh air, listening to the sounds of nature, and watching for local wildlife. Opt for shorter, easy-to-complete strolls or challenge yourself with the 56-mile (90-kilometer) Fraser Island Great Walk, which showcases the island’s diverse landscapes.
4-Wheel Drives
The world’s largest sand island, Fraser Island is not navigable by regular car. So if you want to explore by vehicle, a 4-wheel drive is the only way to get around. Take the wheel yourself for an off-road adventure or travel as a passenger as part of a Fraser Island 4WD tour, following tracks that lead to Seventy-Five Mile Beach, Indian Head, the Pinnacles, the SS Maheno shipwreck, and other sights.
Water Activities
While the seas surrounding the island can be rough, the rock-enclosed Champagne Pools are popular for a protected dip. Otherwise, the window-clear waters of Fraser Island’s 100-plus freshwater lakes are ideal for swimming. Many Fraser Island tours make stops at Wanggoolba Creek, Lake McKenzie, and Eli Creek, all of which are perfect for a refreshing dip, while the fish at Lake Wabby will nibble on dead skin, giving you a free pedicure. Hervey Bay, the watery expanse between the Queensland coast and Fraser Island, can be explored by Jet Ski. Hervey Bay whale-watching excursions also run between May and September.
Camping
While Eurong Beach Resort and Kingfisher Bay Resort cater to comfort-seeking travelers, camping allows you to experience a different, more tranquil side of this UNESCO World Heritage-listed island. Pitch a tent in one of the picturesque camping zones, such as Central Station, then watch the sunset and wait as thousands of stars begin to twinkle overhead. Organized multi-day trips typically depart from Noosa and Rainbow Beach near Great Sandy National Park.
