Taxco Tours and Activities

High in the rugged mountains of the northern state of Guerrero, the city of Taxco de Alarcon was once an isolated Spanish stronghold. Today, it is known for its silver mines and the generations of artisans who create some of Mexico's most beautiful jewelry. In addition to the silver shops, take in the town’s architectural and natural attractions.
The Basics
Though every possible style of silversmithing is on display in the shops that inhabit old adobes lining the town’s steep, cobbled streets, it is the smooth, heavy cast pieces in both modern and traditional designs that are considered true Taxco style. Before you shop, stop into the city's two silver museums to see truly fine pieces: the Museo de la Plateria, which also covers Mexico's history in silver, and the Museo Guillermo Spratling, with pottery and other exhibits.
All that glitters is not silver, however. The city also has several other worthy attractions. Culture fans will love the richly detailed baroque facade and soaring interior of 18th-century Catedral de Santa Prisca, while active travelers will enjoy hiking to waterfalls and mountaintops around town. Multi-day and all-day trips to Taxco from Mexico City are available, as well as guided tours from Acapulco.
Things to Know Before You Go
- Taxco is a great overnight stop if you're traveling between Acapulco and Mexico City, with a solid selection of nice, if not luxurious, hotels.
- Try Taxco’s signature drink, called Berta, a combination of tequila with honey and lemon.
- Safety in the Mexican state of Guerrero has come into question due to crime, according to the US Department of State. Although tourists are rarely targeted, travelers considering a visit should refer to their government’s travel advisories for the latest information.
How to Get There
It is about 173 miles (280 kilometers) between Acapulco and Taxco, using the fast, safe toll road. The old Mexico City–Acapulco freeway is slower but much more scenic; you'll need to take it for the last half hour of your trip either way. Several buses make the 4-hour trip between Acapulco and Taxco daily. It's worth spending a few extra dollars for an air-conditioned bus.
When to Get There
Be sure to make reservations well in advance for Semana Santa (Easter Week), when the city puts on its famous fiestas. You can also book a day trip from Mexico City to celebrate Good Friday; the tour includes a viewing of the traditional Passion Play (a portrayal of the crucifixion of Jesus), which takes place at the former convent of San Bernardino de Siena.
Cuernavaca
Some guided tours include a stop in Cuernavaca, the capital of the Mexican state of Morelos, located in the Tepozteco Mountains south of Mexico City. Enjoy the balmy weather and colorful landscapes of this picturesque town, which also offers a wide range of outdoor activities like golf, kayaking, camping, mountain biking, and more. It’s a popular weekend escape for residents of Mexico City.
