Frigata Dom Fernando II e Glória Tours

Frigata Dom Fernando II e Glória
The historic Dom Fernando II e Glória frigate was Portugal’s last sailing warship. Featuring three masts and 50 cannons, the vessel has been restored to appear as it did when the Portuguese Navy launched it in 1843. The ship, now dry-docked just outside of Lisbon, is one of the best preserved examples of a wooden-hulled frigate in the world.

The Basics
The maiden voyage of the Dom Fernando II e Glória was from Goa (where she was built) to Lisbon, and she sailed for 100,000 nautical miles across Asia and Africa until being decommissioned in 1878. After a fire destroyed most of its hull in the 1960s, the 8th-oldest warship in the world was restored to its former glory in the ’90s. Most half- and full-day Lisbon tours that explore the southern side of the Tagus river pass by the frigate.

Things to Know Before You Go
  • Frigata Dom Fernando II e Gloria is a must-visit for those interested in nautical history, as well as families with children.
  • Guided tours are available in Portuguese, English, Spanish, and French.
  • The ship has steep stairs to the lower floors so is not accessible for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility.

How to Get There
Frigata Dom Fernando II e Gloria is located near the ferry terminal in the Cacilhas area of Almada, across the Tagus from Lisbon. Take the swift public ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas, or drive across the April 25 Bridge (Ponte 25 de Abril) toward the Cova da Piedade/Cacilhas exit.

When to Get There
Frigata Dom Fernando II e Gloria frigate is open from 10am to 5pm Tuesday through Sunday, from 12pm on Mondays, and until 6pm from May through September. One of Lisbon’s lesser-known attractions due to its location, it is rarely crowded. Admission is free on the first Sunday of every month and on April 18 (International Monuments and Sites Day), May 20 (Navy Day), and November 16 (Day of the Sea).

The Frigate Experience
During your tour of Dom Fernando II e Gloria, you can expect to learn a lot about what life was like on a 19th-century warship. There are several decks to explore, which are entertaining for both adults and kids. Each level features mannequins and explanations about the various parts of the ship and what the crew had to endure during long months at sea.
Address: Doca nº 2 da Ex-Parry & Son, Cacilhas, Lisbon, Beiras, Portugal
