Military Museum (Museu Militar) Tours

Considered one of the most impressive artillery collections in the world, the Military Museum in Lisbon is a must-see for those interested in war and military. Housed in beautiful baroque building near the riverfront, the Military Museum is a hidden gem of history that is off the tourist trail. Several exhibition rooms hold artifacts like guns, pistols, swords, and Medieval armors from wars throughout several centuries.

Highlights include two rooms devoted to Napoleon’s invasions, a WWI room, with a statue of a WWI soldier, and the 14th century sword of famed Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama. The museum also holds war-related items like impressive well-kept uniforms, maps and replicas. Some fine art is on display including paintings, sculptures and busts of famous Portuguese generals and explorers. The interior is intricately decorated in baroque style, with frescoes and gilded frames.

The outside courtyard is surrounded by traditional Portuguese tile work that depict the history of Portugal and is also home to dozens of antique cannons, many dating back several centuries and weighing many tons.
