Pharmacie de la Misericorde Tours

Serving as the oldest apothecary in Montpellier, the Pharmacie de la Misericorde is a fascinating glimpse at the history of medicine. Shelves of ancient equipment and original apothecary tools are beautifully on display. Its two rooms represent typical pharmacies of the 18th and 19th centuries, filled with pots, barrels, jugs, and other pottery that once held health remedies. There are also historic portraits lining the walls and an adjacent chapel filled with former workshops and interesting stories.

The pharmacy is particularly worth visiting when considering Montpellier’s role as the oldest continuously-running medical school in Europe. It was here than many of the first doctors and pharmacists developed early medicinal treatments. Prescriptions were given here to nuns who would treat the sick nearby. The sisters of the Charité de Saint Vincent de Paul left the structure in 2001, and it’s now run by the city and classified as a historic site.
