The Basics

While the buildings of the Plaza de España mostly house government offices, the tiled alcoves make for a pleasant stroll; each of the 48 alcoves depicts scenes from one province of Spain. Due to the plaza’s popularity, it’s almost always included as a stop on Seville sightseeing tours (walking tours, bike tours, and river cruises), along with other points of interest like the Seville Cathedral (Catedral de Sevilla), Alcázar royal palace (Real Alcázar), and the Santa Cruz quarter.

Well managed walking tour.
Picked up on time near hotel, most of the tour was on foot after that. Excellent knowledgable guide who managed the large group very well given the crowds of tourists, and the heat! The Plaza, Palace, Jewish quarter, and Cathedral are wonderful sites to see.

Seville Sightseeing Tour: Royal Alcazar Palace, Plaza de Espana, Seville Cathedral and Santa Cruz Quarter
This tour was very good and we had an excellent guide called Melissa. She was knowledgeable, enthusiastic and she made the tour very enjoyable. It was a good tour for seeing some of the main attractions in Seville. The only criticism would be that there was quite a bit of waiting around when people were moved about from one tour to another or when new people joined.

Fabulous tour with Melisa! She was so enthusiastic, funny, and knowledgeable. She takes great care of all of her clients, and was especially patient with some older ladies on our tour:. Pick up was prompt, and the vehicle for transport was good. Highly recommend this tour!

Really great tour. The first hour or so was via van with a large group--this ended up being nice for the A/C since Sevilla can certainly get very warm. Part of the tour was both in Spanish and English the tour guide would give info in Spanish and then report the same info in English which we could have done without, but half way through we split and went into an English only tour group. The only issue we really came across was it got a little confusing when we were switching groups and departing with part of the original tour group, and some time was wasted just getting organized, but other than that we really had no complaints. Loved the Cathedral and Royal Alcazar portion of the tour best.

Seville Sightseeing Tour: Royal Alcazar Palace, Plaza de Espana, Seville Cathedral and Santa Cruz Quarter
This was an amazing tour. We were actually traumatised by a tour we took in Madrid but this was very pleasant. We had a hotel pick-up nearest hotel which was seamless. We had a wonderful tour guide who greeted us with smiles and we were quite a medium-sized group. The tour started with a city tour with plaza de espana the embassies around the city the flamenco school for kids bullrings etc. The tour however is not as intensive as the hop-on/hop-off tour. So if you want the whole city tour I would suggest the hop-on/hop-off bus. What was nice about this tour is the access to the attractions. After the city tour in a bus, we then got off and started a walking tour which was also amazing. This was with a different tour guide who was as wonderful as the first one. the tour was very informative and we went into Placa de Pilatos which was nice and got to know the history around it.The highlight of this tour was the Royal Alcazar, I went in looking for just pictures to say i was there but came back with a mind full of knowledge of its history. It was like semi Spanish crash course. Really enjoyed this tour and highly recommend. PS: There was an issue before we entered the Royal Alcazar regarding arrangements of the groups in their spoken languages. It took a bit of time to sort out but everything was fine afterwards.

Seville Sightseeing Tour: Royal Alcazar Palace, Plaza de Espana, Seville Cathedral and Santa Cruz Quarter
This was an amazing tour with our guide Melissa. First off, we had a hard time finding the meeting point for the tour and were late, but Melissa waited for us as all others were ready to go. We couldnt be picked up because we were in a hotel that couldnt be driven to.All that aside, the tour was great. The first part was in an air conditioned bus. Melissa was multilingual in English and Spanish so no one had difficulty understanding her. She is very vibrant and loves her job.She pointed out many sights along to way to Plaza de Espana, where we had some time to take photos and walk around the grounds. We didnt take any Rosemary The tour continued onto the Santa Cruz Quarter where the streets are narrow and crowded. Just what I hoped it would be. Melissa was very knowledgeable about the Alcazar Palace and the Seville Cathedral. We liked the tour so much that we went back the next day and incorporated it into our plans so we could spend even more time at these exhibits.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The Plaza de España is a must-see for all first-time visitors to Seville.

  • Don’t forget to wear sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat, as the central portion of the plaza doesn’t offer much shade.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to walk; the plaza is the size of five football fields.

  • The flat plaza is accessible to wheelchair users and strollers, as are some of the surrounding sights.

When to Get There

While the alcoves are shaded, much of the plaza is exposed to the intense Spanish sun, so plan to visit from September to May when the sunshine is welcome rather than scorching. To experience the plaza with the fewest crowds, visit first thing in the morning or in the early evening.

A Spanish Photo Op

If you spend some time observing visitors within the plaza, you’ll likely notice Spanish couples and families having their pictures taken in front of the colorful ceramic tiled alcoves. It’s become somewhat of a tradition for visiting Spaniards to snap a photo on their home province’s bench.
