Dress warmly in layers, with your full winter gear on, for this 4-hour immersion into indigenous Alaskan cultures. After hotel pickup, head to the Alaska Native Heritage Center in Anchorage. You’ll be outdoors for 1.5 to two hours of the tour, and will be provided with snowshoes as necessary.
Begin at the Hall of Cultures, which features exhibits about each of the major indigenous groups in Alaska: Athabascan, Inupiaq/St Lawrence Island Yupik, Yup’ik/Cup’ik, Aleut, Alutiiq, and the Eyak, Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian peoples. This is the only center that celebrates these major culture groups under one roof.
Next, take a guided walk around Lake Tiulana and explore six authentic life-sized dwellings. Learn about the different artifacts placed at the village sites, including a totem and a whale-bone arch.
Your tour ends with a film presentation and traditional tea in the theater room.
