Overview

A walk on Matanuska Glacier, a 27-mile river of ancient ice, is a favorite pastime for local Alaskans. This full-day trip from Anchorage gives you a chance to join in the experience. Get fitted with cleats and hiking poles, and spend about two hours exploring the glacier. Make sure to wear warm clothing and bring your camera to capture the blue meltwater pools, ice formations and deep crevasses that you will pass by. This small-group tour, limited to 10 hikers, includes lunch and hotel transport from select locations.
  • 8-hour tour to Matanuska Glacier from Anchorage
  • Walk directly on the glacier and see crevasses, ice formations, and meltwater pools
  • Learn about the geology of Matanuska Susitna Valley
  • Lunch and round-trip hotel transport from select locations included
  • Small-group tour limited to 10 people
After pickup in Anchorage, travel with your guide north of the city into south-central Alaska’s Matanuska Valley. Matanuska Glacier, thousands of years old, is tucked up into the head of the Matanuska Valley. Bring sturdy footwear, as well as an extra pair of socks. Snacks and water are available in your transport vehicle.

Enjoy about two hours walking on the glacier itself, an activity that few people can boast of having done. Depending on glacier conditions, you may walk with crampons, or hop on a sled/machine combo to get onto the glacier and look around (typically used for winter tours).

With your guide by your side, learn about how the Matanuska Glacier originated and how it shaped the landscape in the Matanuska Susitna Valley. Discover blue meltwater pools, the ice formations, and deep crevasses. During your trek, your shoes might get filthy with glacial flour, which is finely ground rock the glacier has created — and it makes for great facials!

After your walk, enjoy lunch at a local eatery before returning to Anchorage.
