This tour of Berlin begins with a hotel lobby meet and greet at any centrally located accommodation. Learn about Berlin’s volatile history and discover the diverse architecture and thriving art and culture of today, all while exploring the city in a comfortable, private vehicle.
Visit Checkpoint Charlie, the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War and Charlottenburg Palace, a former summer residence for the House of Hohenzollern, a dynasty of former princes, electors, kings and emperors. Stop at Alexanderplatz, a large public square and transport hub in the central Mitte district of Berlin. Sample the popular local snack called currywurst, a simple dish of pork sausages and ketchup (own expense).
Hop out of the vehicle and walk alongside the remains of the Berlin Wall at the the Berlin Wall Memorial and East Side Gallery. Visit the famous museums on the Spree river's Museum Island and stop at Kaufhaus des Westens, aka KaDeWe, to do some shopping, if desired.
Other points of interest include the iconic Fernsehturm de Berlín (TV tower), Potsdamer Platz, Brandenburg Gate, Berlin Cathedral and much more.
Then it’s off to nearby Potsdam, the capital city of the German federal state of Brandenburg, to explore its many palaces and other landmark locations. Enjoy an introduction to Potsdam on a sightseeing tour of the historical city center, the Russian colony Alexandrowka and the Dutch Quarter.
Admire majestic royal residences built during the reign of Frederick the Great. There’s Sansoucci Palace, one of the largest UNESCO World Heritage sites in Germany; New Palace, the largest and most impressive palace ensemble in Sanssouci; the small, neo-classical Charlottenhof Palace, also in Sanssouci Park; and Orangery Palace, built in the style of the High Renaissance and commissioned by King Frederick William IV.
There will be free time to wander and explore. Don’t forget to visit the Roman Baths or Chinese House garden pavillion, among other attractions. Ask the guide for information on all the must-see spots.
Finally, a return trip to the Berlin hotel concludes the tour.
