After downtown Boston hotel pickup, relax on the 1.5-hour drive to Newport, Rhode Island. Learn about the city’s heritage and architecture. Enjoy breathtaking views of historic mansions, secluded beaches, impressive yachts and the Atlantic Ocean in the Ocean Drive Historic District, also known as Ten Mile Drive. The grand houses here were the summer homes of the cream of New York society in the 19th century.

The first stop is at the Breakers mansion, the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages” and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial standing a century ago. Take a walking tour to learn all about it.

Then enjoy a couple hours for lunch, shopping or a leisurely walk along the waterfront to enjoy views of the harbor, complete with private yachts, racing sailboats and Newport’s fishing fleet.

From there, continue the tour at another Vanderbilt vacation home, Marble House, a 19th-century mansion made of white marble that is now also a U.S. National Historic Landmark. This Gilded Age marvel is the architectural landmark that ushered in Newport’s transformation from a quaint summer colony of wooden houses to its current status as a resort region of opulent mega-mansions.

Finally, enjoy Ten Mile Drive again, admiring the scenic beauty on the journey back to Boston. Hotel drop-off is included on this tour.

Note: This seasonal tour operates only from June to October.
