Visit the wineries near Lake Tahoe on this day trip to the El Dorado AVA (American Viticultural Area), a wine appellation outside the town of Placerville in the Sierra foothills. Accompanied by a wine guide, you’ll enjoy visits to six wineries, where tastings are included at the first three. Also included are a stop at Boa Vista fruit orchard, an outdoor picnic-style lunch and transport from South Lake Tahoe. If you’re interested in wine or agriculture, this is a great way to see more of this region of Northern California.
  • Day trip from Lake Tahoe to El Dorado wine country
  • Visit six wineries in the Sierra Nevada foothills, former Gold Rush country
  • Sample varietals like merlot, chardonnay and sangiovese
  • Enjoy a picnic lunch on the grounds of one of the wineries
  • Visit Boa Vista apple orchard
  • Tasting fees at three wineries are included
  • Round-trip transport from South Lake Tahoe is included
Your day trip starts when you leave South Lake Tahoe by minibus or coach for the approximate 1.5-hour drive along Highway 50 to the El Dorado AVA, a wine appellation near the historical city of Placerville, once the heart of the California Gold Rush of the 1840s.
With your knowledgeable guide, visit six wineries, which enjoy picturesque locations near neighboring Apple Hill, a region of apple farms and other fruit orchards that dot the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The specific wineries you visit vary by day, but venues may include Jodar Vineyards & Winery, where you can taste sangiovese, zinfandel or petit syrah while admiring a view of Blakeley Lake, and Boeger Winery, home to 40 acres (16 hectares) of vines that turn into varietals such as pinot noir, chardonnay and merlot.
Tastings are provided at the first three wineries before your alfresco winery lunch, which typically includes items such as gourmet cheese, bread, deli meats, hummus, vegetables and fruit that you can use to make your own salad or sandwich. Then head to the final three wineries, where the tasting fees are not included but you are free to pay for tastings on your own, if you wish (fees are sometimes waived if you purchase a bottle). Lastly, visit Boa Vista, an orchard known its baked goods, apple cider and preserves, before making the journey back to South Lake Tahoe, where your day trip ends.

This was so much fun and I highly recommend it for first time and returning visitors. Again, Snowshoe John was our host and he was entertaining and informative. Jodar was a wonderful winery with great wines, and Mitch the Wine Guy was very fun! Thanks, Suzanne and Vicki

The scenery was gorgeous and the weather perfect for a day in the wine country. Our guide, Snowshoe John, was very knowledgeable about the area and entertaining as well. Highly recommended!

Great trip ! After a beautiful informative drive you arrive in wine country. Everyone at all the wineries were super nice and a lot of fun. Enjoyed a great lunch at the third winery. After lunch you were given the option to either visit a another winery or visit a craft brewery which we chose to do. Fun way to spend a day !

The trip was a lot of fun. Snowshoe John knows a lot about the area and the history. It makes the time to the sites pass quickly. The first three wineries are definitely the best. The last three are ok. Basically sales sites for wineries not on site. But the one that pairs cheese with the wine is definitely worth the time.

Informative tour guide, good number of tastings. Nice comfy tour bus. Lunch was a serve yourself sandwich buffet with food from a grocery store. No scenic sites for pictures. Very pretty drive but no stops for scenic views or pictures. Even the wineries were not on scenic winery views.

Loved it! We also went last year. The only thing I wish they would change is more time at the second stop. They have a wonderful Farmers Market and would love more time. The last stop was way too long. Should switch. Other than that it was wonderful and would go again.

Snowshoe John, our guide, was great! Informative and fun. We were a bit ahead of schedule and he gave us a mini-side trip to Hangtown with the background on the name. All in all a fun day!

Our guide, Snowshoe John, was very knowledgeable and informative about the Tahoe area and the old Pony Express route and history. Our first stop, the Boeger Vineyards was beautiful, the wines were great and the day was perfect. The other two morning stops paled in comparison but were still interesting. Our guide allowed us to call an afternoon audible and we stopped at the Jack Russell Brewery for some beer tasting. GREAT beers and a lovely afternoon...great end to the trip!

We enjoyed this trip a great deal. We appreciate someone else - like Tour Guide Snowshoe John - driving the mountain roads and providing a commentary on the geographical and natlural history of the area. I had recently been to Napa, so I really enjoyed the small wineries and casual environment. Our Guide did a fine job with the luncheon selections. Wines were great!

Great trip! Second time we have taken this same tour. May be nice to look at mixing it up a bit as there are more wineries in that area or even extend it out longer during cooler months.
