Meet your personal guide at your central Chengdu hotel, and hop inside your private, air-conditioned vehicle. Then, with your guide and separate driver, relax on your journey into Dujiangyan prefecture, situated about 37 miles (60 kilometers) northwest of Chengdu.
Along the way, view China’s countryside and hear fascinating facts about your destination: the Dujiangyan Panda Base, a forward-thinking giant panda conservation, breeding, and research center. Set over 126 acres (51 hectares), the base incorporates tracts of bamboo forest that offer a beautiful natural habitat for the resident pandas.
In contrast to the Chengdu Base of Giant Panda Breeding that specializes in breeding captive pandas, Dujiangyan focuses on helping injured and ill pandas return to the wild, as well as providing a secure environment for aged and disabled pandas. Facilities include a rescue, quarantine, and hospital area; disease control and research laboratories; rehabilitation, training and feeding zones; and a public educational center.
On arrival, take a tour of the center and view the giant pandas cared for here. Learn about the center’s work in looking after these rare animals and its efforts to reintroduce them to the wild.
After ample time here, enjoy a Chinese lunch at a local restaurant, and continue to the nearby Qingcheng Howard Johnson Resort hotel. Standing in large, exotic grounds, the hotel boasts a modern hot springs complex nestled in subtropical gardens — the Taoism Hot Springs center.
Leave your guide and enjoy two hours to relax in the invitingly warm pools. Soak in the indoor pool or absorb the delightful setting in any of the 10 outdoor pools, taking in the surrounding high trees and chirruping of birds as you bathe.
When the time comes, reconvene with your guide and driver, and travel back to Chengdu where your tour ends with a hotel drop-off.
