Prepare for a half-day tour of the Otago Peninsula, where New Zealand wildlife flourishes along the rugged coastline. After pickup from your Dunedin hotel or the cruise port, you’re transferred by minivan to a remote region where you’ll embark on a leisurely 2.5-mile (4-km) hike.

During the scenic drive, stop for photo ops and listen to your guide narrate interesting facts about the geographical features, flora and fauna of this South Island landscape.

On arrival, follow your guide along a coastal track of native bush above coves dotted with rock formations. See a basalt column called the Chasm, and stand at the Lovers Leap vista point for the best views of a natural bridge. You’ll descend a 650-foot (200-meter) sand dune to the beach, where you’re welcomed into a private hut for light refreshments.

Your guide shares knowledge of local marine life and points out any animals that frequently come ashore, including sea lions, New Zealand fur seals and the yellow-eyed penguins that inhabit the Otago Peninsula. Enjoy a stroll along the beach before the approx. 20-minute return journey to Dunedin, with drop-off at your hotel or cruise terminal.
