After early pickup from your Luxor hotel, hop inside your private, climate-controlled vehicle with your Egyptologist guide. Then, make the approximately 2.5-hour journey to Abydos, driving northward through the Nile valley.
Absorb the views of rural Egypt as you travel, and hear intriguing background on the site of Abydos, one of the most important cities of ancient Egypt and a cult center of the god Osiris. Learn how ancient Egyptians believed the site was the burial place of the ‘Lord of the Underworld,’ and listen as your guide sheds light on its main monument, the Temple of Seti I.
On arrival, hop outside for a tour of the temple. Learn how it was started by Seti I before being completed by his son, Ramses II, in around 1300 BC. Wander through the building, seeing its hypostyle halls and sanctuaries, famous for being graced by some of Egypt’s most beautifully preserved reliefs. Admire the still-colored paintings, many depicting Osiris, Horus, and Seti himself making offerings to the gods.
After lunch at a local restaurant (own expense) of your choice, continue to Dendera, home to the Temple of Hathor, historically known as the Temple of Tentyra.
Take a guided walk around this late-era edifice, built between 13 BC and the 1st century AD as an ancient healing center. Admire the reliefs of Roman emperors and deities, and inside, view the laboratory, probably used for the preparation of ointments, together with the pillared halls, kiosks, and more.
Visit the shrines to the sun god Ra and Hathor, and inspect the Dendera Zodiac, a ceiling star chart showing the elements of the zodiac, in the chapel to Osiris.
Afterward, return to Luxor, where your tour concludes with a drop-off at your hotel.
