Famous as the birthplace of the Olympic Games, the city drew athletes, spectators, and pilgrims every four years during Greece’s Classical period. It was also the site of one the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World—a giant gold and ivory statue of the father of all Greek gods at the Temple of Zeus.

At the archaeological site, explore the remnants of this sanctuary and the Olympic stadium, where a race starting line is still visibly etched into the marble. Imagine the feats of sweat and glory that took place here for centuries as you stand surrounded by stone ruins and greenery. Visit the museum for an up-close look at excavated relics including the Temple of Zeus pediments and statues of Nike and Hermes.

After ample time immersed in the ancient world, contrast the area’s modern-day culture with a visit to contemporary Olympia. Enjoy leisure time to shop and explore before the return drive to Katakalo and your cruise ship.

Archaeological Site of Olympia
In western Peloponnese, in the beautiful valley of the Alpheios river, lies the most celebrated sanctuary of ancient Greece. Dedicated to Zeus, the father of the gods, it sprawls over the southwest foot of Mount Kronios, at the confluence of the Alpheios and the Kladeos rivers, in a lush, green landscape. Although secluded near the west coast of the Peloponnese, Olympia became the most important religious and athletic centre in Greece. Its fame rests upon the Olympic Games, the greatest national festival and a highly prestigious one world-wide, which was held every four years to honour Zeus. The origin of the cult and of the festival went back many centuries. Local myths concerning the famous Pelops, the first ruler of the region, and the river Alpheios, betray the close ties between the sanctuary and both the East and West.

The Archaeological Museum of Olympia, one of the most important museums in Greece, presents the long history of the most celebrated sanctuary of antiquity, the sanctuary of Zeus, father of both gods and men, where the Olympic games were born. The museum's permanent exhibition contains finds from the excavations in the sacred precinct of the Altis dating from prehistoric times to the Early Christian period. Among the many precious exhibits the sculpture collection, for which the museum is most famous, the bronze collection, the richest collection of its type in the world, and the large terracottas collection, are especially noteworthy.
