Begin your day with an early-morning pickup from your central Guangzhou hotel in time for an 8.30am departure (pickup times will be confirmed upon booking). Traveling aboard a comfortable bus or coach, set out on the 2-hour journey to Kaiping County, passing a scenic panorama of lush rice fields, green farmlands, and rural villages.
Along the way, listen as your guide explains the region’s rich history and unique architecture, characterized by its unusual Diaolou watchtowers. Hear how the region’s UNESCO-protected villages were built in the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries, fusing eastern and western architecture to create castle-like watchtowers that served as protection against bandits.
Arrive in Zili village around 10.30am and set out to explore two of the most impressive watchtowers – the six-story Mingshi Lou and five-story Yunhuan Lou, both built in the early 1920s.
After plenty of time to admire the views and take photos, break for lunch (included) at a local restaurant around 12.30pm. Tuck into some delicious Cantonese-style cuisine before continuing to the nearby town of Chikan, around a 20-minute drive away.
On arrival in Chikan, jump out to explore the historic Old Town with your guide. Hear how the town was established during the Qing dynasty as you stroll along the banks of the Tan River and admire the striking 1920s merchant buildings, with their decorative pillars and balconies overlooking the water.
After around an hour in Chikan, return to Guangzhou, where your tour ends with drop-off at your hotel around 5.30pm.
