Meet your guide upon pickup from your hotel in downtown Hangzhou. You'll depart in the morning for Shaoxing, located about a 1-hour drive away on the southern shore of Hangzhou Bay.
On arrival, explore the canal-lined city aboard a traditional wupeng (black-awning) boat. Your guide points out the residences, ancient bridges, and bazaars along the banks, before you disembark for a walk to Shen Garden. Once belonging to its namesake, a wealthy businessman of the Southern Song Dynasty, this was the largest private garden in Shaoxing and served as inspiration for many Chinese poems.
Following a restaurant lunch of Chinese dishes, it's a short walk to the Orchid Pavilion, which dates back centuries. See skilled displays of orchid arrangement and admire classical gardens honoring the 4th-century calligraphy of Wang Xizhi. The site is considered one of the birthplaces of Chinese calligraphy, and in the year 353 dozens of members of the literati gathered at the pavilion to write poetry together.
After a look around, your tour concludes with return transport to your hotel in Hangzhou.
