Our tour begins when your Captain picks you up at the Icy Strait Point Excursions Hub. Only a (3-5 minutes) along Shaman Point to the Hoonah City Commercial Dock, where our charter boat the Freda Marie will be waiting. Keep your eyes peeled open on the drive as you may spot local wildlife; sitka blacktail deer, coastal brown beers, ravens, bald eagles, sealions, otters, and much more.
You will then board the Freda Marie and leave the Hoonah Harbor in search of the majestic humpback whales. If you are lucky you might spot orcas (killer whales). However, it is common to see bears, deer, coastal ducks, blue herons, puffins, terns, along the coastline, and sea otters, sea lions, porpoises, and seals in the water.
Humpback whales arrive to Icy Strait every summer in huge numbers before migrating south again in the winter. The whale population begins to arrive in Hoonah in May and stay through September. Although, we have a few resident whales that stick around all year. Humpback whales are large baleen whales that can reach over 50 feet in length and weigh as much as 30-50 tons. They are perhaps most famous for their whale songs, thought to be used by males as a mating call. Humpbacks are amazingly active and typical whale sightings will include diving, blows, and flukes (tails). Lucky whale-watchers may get to see breaching, bubble-net feeding. Observing humpbacks practice bubble-net feeding is a real treat and a truly thrilling experience.
Our boat is economically built for speed and comfort, and perfectly suited for our Alaskan lifestyle. With a large rear viewing deck, plenty of windows, and a heated cabin our guests will stay warm and dry as they experience wild Alaska, and we also have a small bathroom on board.
While on board, enjoy complimentary drinks* and snacks, these are by no means full meals, so please feel free to bring your own food too if you know you’ll be hungry!
