• Day 1: Marrakesh - Zagora

After pickup from Marrakech at 7am, you will begin your journey crossing the High Atlas Mountains through the Tizi n'tichka pass toward the beautiful village of Ait Benhaddou. Upon arrival at the site, enjoy the splendour of its historical castle which is built on a hill, overlooking the area.

From there, you will stop in Draa Valley well-known for its amazing Ksour and Kasbah before climbing to an altitude of over 3,800 feet (1160 meters) in the arid land of Ouarzazate city. Within the last portion of the drive connecting Ouarzazate with Zagora, you will admire the most beautiful valleys of Morocco and its beautiful villages filled with local handicraft shops.

In the past, the Oasis of Zagora was a caravan centre, the starting point of the great trans-Saharan convoys. Once there, you will enjoy a 1-hour camel ride from Zagora to reach the bivouac campsite. Along the way, you will be able to view the amazing panoramic sunset. At the camp, you will savour a traditional dinner under the starlit sky and retire to your tent to spend the night near the dunes of Zagora.

Day 2: Zagora - Marrakesh

In the early morning around 5am, you will wake to a beautiful sunrise over the sand dunes and enjoy a typical Berber breakfast offered at the camp. Once again, you will ride camel for 1 hour going to Zagora. If time and weather permits, you will visit Tamegroute. It's only about 13 miles (20 kilometers) from Zagora on the old road to Timbuktu. The town is known for its historical library of the Koranic School of Zaouia Naciria and by the handicrafts cooperative of pottery.

Along the route to Marrakech, you will enjoy lunch in a local restaurant (at own expense) before making the circuit again through the Atlas mountains and through the Tizi n'Tichka pass.

You Wont It depends what you expect / you won't go to the "real" dessert

First of all let's have a look, what you're actually doing. You will be picked up at the hotel at roughly 7 am. Then you will have a minibus ride for 4-5 hours to get to the kasbah Ait-Ben-Haddou. There you will be shown arround by an local with fluent English. As you will be 20-30 people there is not much interaction. Afterwards you'll have lunch and ride another 3-4 hours to the meeting point. From the meeting point which is a big crossing you will ride the camel for 30-40 minutes. In the berber camp you'll get dinner and sleep in tents with 4 inhabitants each. In the morning you can have a look at the sunrise, receive bread as breakfast and go back. On the way back you'll be brought into a carpet manufaktury and then a scarv weavery, where they try to sell you stuff. The trip is simply not worth the time. All in all the kasbah is nice and their so called "Zagora Desert" was ok. The organisation around it was horrible. Starting from nobody talking to you what happens next, to communicating the wrong wake up time for the sunset, not getting in contanct about the hotel pick-up to the lack of speaking English etc. This list could go on and on. Additionally you'll spend 20 hours in a minivan with 30°C driving through the curvy and bumpy high atlas. At least 3 people got sea sick due to the rough ride. My personal recomondation y´would be that if you really want to see the sandy desert with dunes and everything, than go to Erg'Chebbi or Erg Chigaga. You'll need to invest probably 3 days as it is a 10 hours ride from Marrakech, but those two days aren't worth it. It feels like investing 90% of the effort getting there and only beeing almost there...
