The real tour of Oxford.
, Aug 2019
The tour was great, full of information and our guide very entertaining.
I would prefare that we had a wider variety of languages, as our kids did not understand English, and we had to make some basic translation.
Our first circuit to get the feel and plan of Oxford on our first day was excellent (lovely informative lady driver, excellent audio equipment and several people rang a bell if they wanted to get off at the next stop. However the next day we got on an old rattle bus and we could hardly hear the commentary and were unable to turn up the volume! In the afternoon we caught a bus to take us back to our hotel and rang the bell to tell the driver to stop at the next stop as we had been told on the first bus not to stand up until the bus stops!!! Therefore we had to go round the circuit again!!! While at the station stop we asked the driver why he didn’t stop when we pressed the bell? He said he hadn’t heard it!! And was quite off hand when we asked him to definitely stop at 16 next time round. We have been on many city hop on hop off tour and they have all been excellent. It would seem that Oxford do not regularly check the buses audios and bells!
Good way to get an overview of the city. The tour is somewhat driver dependent. I bought a multi-day pass and one day had a driver who took the tour part seriously and slowed down so that you could actually catch the sites. On another day, the bus driver was simply driving and didn't greet guests- guess he was having a bad day.
I didn't have a car there and it helped to get a feel for the city. The only hitch was getting to the blue bus. It was hard to figure out where to get it. That bus was a little disappointing because it didn't have as many historic places and information.
Oxford is not an easy city for driving around, so we found it helpful to just park at the Park and Ride (Redbridge) outside of town and take the bus into Oxford. The only reason for not giving 5 stars is the limited hours. We were rushed for time for fear of missing the last bus to the car park.
